Bit of a strange place. A healthy food/eating motif with an Asian "order at the counter, we bring it to you" service set up. The food wasn't bad but it wasn't memorable.

I come her to mainly study. WiFi access and free coffee and iced tea refills. Great family and collegiate environment.

I had the chicken pot pie which was quite tasty but also quite over priced. All the food is good but not amazing and crave-able. I don't visit Flying Star very often because I find myself irritated by the high prices. They are closing many of the locations down and have filed for Chapter 11 so maybe I'm not the only customer with this opinion.

The staff was very pleasant and the food was good too. The mac and cheese was excellent - as was the chicken-mushroom dish. Lots of desserts to choose from- all looked great. Cool seating and usage of space

Flying Star Cafe closing downtown location

Updated: 10/14/2015 5:22 PM | Created: 10/14/2015 5:12 PM

The Flying Star Café is closing its downtown location at Silver and 8th Street.

The owners blame it on a shrinking daytime population downtown and a declining market, in spite of the recent downtown moves by Molina Health Care and CNM.

Flying Star renovated the old Southern Union Gas Company building and opened for its first customers 10 years ago. The restaurant was an instant hit, but business has waned in recent years.

The restaurant can sit nearly 300, so it keeps a lot of customers to keep the lights on and the griddles hot.

Downtown customers say they will miss the place.

"You kind of know everybody when you come to Flying Star or Satellite Coffee," said customer Seth Rozzelle. "It's like you see the same people all the time and they really know you and what you want. Seeing the place go is kind of sad for the economy in downtown."

In January, Flying Star closed its restaurants in Bernalillo and the Santa Fe Railyard after filing Chaper 11 bankruptcy.

But after the downtown location closes next week, they'll still have six other restaurants in Albuquerque – to which the 35 employees downtown will be transferred.

The company says it is expanding its new lower-priced menu after complaints the menu is too expensive.
