Stopped off here for lunch driving through Albuquerque. The food was fantastic, and I understand why it has received so much attention. A real display of the fusion of Mexican and Native American flavors in New Mexico. The red chile sauce?!?! Wow. Just go...

I have been enjoying Mary & Tito's since the late 70s. It was good then, its good now. Their menu is basically the same as it has been for years. Why mess with things that aren't broken?

Hmm............what to order? There is really only one choice, carne adovada. Get it in one form or another but get it one way or another. The carne adovada plate, carne adovada burrito, carne adovada pizza or carne adovada "turnovers" will all satisfy. Do yourself, get the red chile sauce. Yeah the green chile is good but this is Mary & Tito's where red rocks!

All the the accompaniments are fine, beans, rice and so on. But even if they weren't, its the carne you come for and return for time and time again.

Back in 2010, the James Beard Foundation chose Mary & Tito's for their Americas Classic Award. Such an honor! It only took them 40 plus years to learn what we in Albuquerque have know for all along!!

Our first visit to this Albuquerque Landmark.
The beef avocado with green chili was a hit...Tasty with a wonderful spicy sauce.
Another of our party tried the chicken burrito and it was without spices and little flavor...Stick to the avocado entrees.

We had a take out order of Mexican Wedding cake...Large enough for two.

This restaurant was a James Beard award winner in 2010 for Classic American Cooking...Not Too Shabby.

I usually order the chicken combo "turnover" with green chile, so I cannot comment on the other menu items. The turnovers are giant puffy fried dough crescents filled with chicken, beans, rice, cheese and chile. They are similar to stuffed sopapillas except they are much much larger. They fill a large oval plate with good, hot, filling Mexican food. The Mexican wedding cake is the best thing here, however. Homemade and excellent, if you can find room for it after a turnover. Free chips and salsa are served first - typical of many restaurants here they have a distinctive homemade salsa, not my favorite, but acceptable. I go here for lunch with a coworker. He agrees the turnovers are the best item, and the other menu items not so much (he has ordered other dishes while I stuck to the turnovers). Atmosphere is typical Mexican eatery, not touristy, not self conscious or fussy. Friendly staff. Good service.
