“Nothing fancy but quality Mexican food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 4, 2012

You have to be careful when selecting Mexican restaurants in Old Town; some are definitely better than others but this is a good choice. Monica's El Portal is very near old town but just off the main plaza area and very easy to reach by car. It even has a parking lot, so you don't have to pay for parking.

We found Monica's El Portal to be a casual and very reasonably priced restaurant. They do charge for chips and salsa but it is worth it for $1.25. Really liked the basket of sopapillas severed with the entrees and the Mexican rice was great. Two can easily eat well here for $20.

“We'll be going back..............”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 8, 2012

In general I wouldn’t recommend eating at any of the restaurants near Old Town Monica’s El Portal is definitely an exception. The service was fast and friendly, the prices were quite reasonable and, most importantly, the food was excellent. The food is not typical restaurant Mexican food – it is more home style – like something that my wife’s Aunts would cook - simple, unpretentious and quite delicious.

Next time we’re in Albuquerque we’ll definitely be going back to Monica’s El Portal!

“Spicy Chile Rellenos.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 5, 2012

This retaurant across Rio Grande Ave from Old Town has a huge parking lot -- a big advantage in this crowded locale. My chile rellenos were spicy hot and crispy. Monica's didn't drown them in the green chile sauce and make them soggy, a big plus in my book. I had beans and papas as sides and they both were good.

We had lunch at Monica's and it was terrific! Great New Mexican fare - we had burritos and tamales. Good service and tasty food in a convenient location.
