“Come hungry!!!”
Reviewed October 8, 2010

They have a wide selection of seafood, steaks, and specialty entrees. Warm baguettes with roasted garlic on the side was served to all with an unlimited salad bowl and individual dressings. The best mussels with loads of garlic, butter, and lemon slices followed and then the entrees with loaded baked potatoes. The prime rib, scallops, salmon and teriyaki chicken were all excellent. We were celebrating a birthday which triggered a HUGE slice of ice cream cake delivered gratis to the birthday boy along with forks for all. I will return the next time I visit ABQ. Delicious!!!

“Good Food, Questionable Management”
Reviewed January 12, 2010

Tried Pelican's for the first time in January 2010. Was quite satisfied with the prime rib and "special" sea bass. Both were well prepared and very tasty. Salad (very ample) and soup sides were also good, however side sweet potatoes were a bit cold and not too appetizing

Big problem with management approach... They need to decide what clientele they are aiming at. If they are going to compete with Red Lobster...fine...if they are reaching for a bit more upscale...then they need to focus.

Made reservation (for two) well in advance...upon arrival had to wait more than 15 minutes (near restroom entrance..yech)...overheard walk-in customers being told to expect the same wait. Why make reservations if they are not going to be honored?? Also...when finally seated....was led to uncomfortable table in the middle of a very busy room.. Fortunately, apt maitre-de responded to our preference for a more private table and found a suitable option...

Service overall was good ...but the manager?? gentleman floating about directing wait and table staff appeared grumpy and stressed... did not engage customers or make an effort to enhance dining experience?? (maybe just a bad day?? But for a 60 dollar-plus dinner for two...a little more enthusiasm would be nice!! ...seemed like he just wanted everyone's money and then to move them along??)

Generally, would recommend Pelican's ...but would pass this warning along to others...If you are looking for a nice place for a dinner date....think twice.... many customers appeared to be well dressed and reaching for this type of experience...while others were in sweats and boisterous....

A bit of thought by the management could make Pelican's a better experience for all...perhaps a re-think on table arrangement and especially on how to handle reservations....(if you can't reserve a table and accommodate a reservation that arrives "on time" ....then maybe you shouldn't try!!)

Sincerely,

Chuck W.

“Good family restaurant”
Reviewed December 31, 2007

Pelican is on the south side of Montgomery just east of Eubank. The nautical decor is at odds with the high desert surroundings; perhaps it was left behind millions of years ago, when Albuquerque rested under an inland sea? There is plenty of parking in the half-deserted strip mall behind the restaurant.

This is my in-laws' favorite restaurant in the city. And while I tend to complain to my wife every time they ask to meet us there, I have to admit that the Pelican serves good solid food at reasonable prices. You can get trout, halibut, tuna, shrimp and mahi mahi, among other things. Entree prices are in the high teens, and there are early bird specials until 6: 30 p.m. that include salad or soup and run a little over $10.

If you're willing to overlook the fact that the Pelican is long in the tooth and could use a little sprucing up, you'll have a fine time here. Service is brisk and friendly, the communal salad comes in a satellite dish-sized bowl, and the waitstaff will bring you a giant slab of mud pie and sing to you on your birthday (there were three, including my son's, on our last visit). Your younger children will love the fish tank, which includes a clownfish (same species as Nemo).

Yes, the Pelican is the best seafood restaurant in Albuquerque. Not that the bar is set that high, but still...it's a much appreciated institution.

“Fresh Fish...”
Reviewed December 21, 2005

My wife & I have lived in Albuquerque for over quarter century now, & this is one of our preferred establishment’s for dinner. It has to be one of the best seafood restaurant's in town. Being New Mexico is located in the middle of the desert, & miles from the nearest ocean, truly fresh seafood is hard to come by. Not like in Florida, the freshness of the seafood is always a concern here.

The atmosphere, the service & the menu selections at Pelican's are truly exceptional to say the least! A great restaurant to take a perspective client, family member's visiting from out of town, or just for a romantic place to take your wife out for lunch or dinner.

My wife & I would highly recommend Pelican's Restaurant the next time you're in the mood for delicious seafood in Albuquerque.
