“Luckily, Bob Irvine didn't mess with the menu too much!”
Reviewed June 17, 2014

We have enjoyed this restaurant since it opened. Elvis (owner/chef) really knows how to combine flavors. The tempura battered green chiles are a fabulous item that is no longer on the menu, but ask for it as an appetizer. Best part of all dishes are the sauces & aiolis. Fresh, unique flavors. The restaurant has beer & wine (limited to a red and a white. Both decent & well-priced), as well as freshly made fruit "sodas." Save room for dessert. All are excellent, though my fave is the sweet potato donuts! Service can be slow on busy weekend evenings.

“Shocked”
Reviewed June 12, 2014

I was brought to this restaurant by a dear friend of mine who has excellent taste in restaurants. Hence I was shocked to find such low quality of food. The appetizer of empanadas was greasy and the roasted peppers were overly sweet. We sent back the ceviche because the fish did not taste fresh very raw and the onions/chiles were barely chopped. Fortunately the waiter was very kind about it. We ordered salads, the salad dressing was nonexistent. If there was dressing on it it was so incredibly bland. It was supposed to have quinoa on it, but it basically was just little pieces of it that we're uncooked and got stuck in my teeth. Again complained to the waiter. He was again very sorry about the quality. He offered us a dessert on the house. It was supposed to be a cheesecake but in fact it was a blob of goat cheese sweet mixture with some mango syrup on top of a graham cracker: not what I would call a cheesecake. Needless to say I will never go again. By the way the air conditioning didn't work.

“What a find!”
Reviewed May 15, 2014

An Albuquerque friend took us here to have a great meal in a quiet neighborhood place. Pasion Latin Fusion is clean and kind of "ordinary": just what we wanted!

The meal (lunch) was great as was the service, and it was enough quiet to have a decent conversation. Inventive dishes made us want to return, which we will when we come back to Albuquerque.

“Fusion surprise”
Reviewed April 29, 2014

My girlfriend and I arrived a few minutes early before the restaurant opened for dinner. After we were seated on the upper deck in the dining area, we both noticed an unusually peculiar odor. The French fries that came with the carnitas tacos we ordered were too greasy. Additionally, we ordered plantain empanadas that were also too greasy. However, the service was good.

“Stop for Dinner, Not for Dessert”
Reviewed April 21, 2014

My partner and I were in Albuquerque over Easter weekend with a friend and her son for a get away weekend. My partner wanted to go to La Pasion after seeing it on Restaurant Impossible. We are fans of the show for many reasons, including Tonya's interesting designs and of course to see how the food taste that Chef Irvine does dances about.

We made dinner reservations for 7:45 PM Saturday night. Upon arriving the outside of the building was disappointing. We had forgotten that they show didn't do anything to help the exterior this time. Upon entering the restaurant we had to wait 5 minutes while someone came to the host stand to greet us. There were 3 employees in the dining room, but none of them even acknowledged our presence. Finally after 5 minutes one of the waitresses came to greet us. She showed us a seat on the "upper" level. The lack of customer service and friendly atmosphere was one of the things pointed out on the show. Not 1 of the employees were smiling.

The interior looked exactly like it did on the makeover, nothing has changed from what we could see. The fireplace in the middle of the dining room is interesting, but completely out of place. We're not sure why Tonya did not design it out of the picture. The bench that Tom installed on the upper level looked very uncomfortable (the angle of the back was weird). The large tile mural that Tonya designed with the name on the wall was pretty cool in real life. The restroom cube off the the side of the kitchen entrance was just plain weird. One of our party went to the restroom and refused to go in because of the odor of raw sewage.

Upon studying the menu we decided to share several appetizers and a main course to get a good sampling of the food. We ordered the Cauliflower a al Plancha, the Bacon Wrapped Plantains, and the Pasion Ceviche to start off. For the main course we ordered the Banana Chip Fish Tacos (there are 2 on a plate so we ordered a third since there were 3 of us there).

The Cauliflower was amazing. Perfectly cooked and excelled seasonings. It was so good we were almost tempted to lick the plate. Everyone should try this even if you do not like cauliflower.

The Bacon Wrapped Plantains were so-so. Not sure that plantains should be wrapped with bacon, even though everyone says everything tastes better with bacon. In this case it was ok.

The Ceviche was outstanding. The fish was cooked to perfection. There were just enough tortilla chips for the 3 of us to share. Definitely a signature dish.

The Banana Chip Tacos were very good. The fish was cooked to perfection. Nice crispy crust. The Chipotle mayo was perfectly seasoned and did not overpower the dish as chipotle can. The tortillas were perfect, none of them tore or cracked as tortillas sometimes do with fish tacos. Another must try dish.

The only true downside of the entire evening came with the dessert. We decided to share the Azteca Bread Pudding (we were stuffed from the other items, but decided to sacrifice for bread pudding). Let me preface this by saying my partner and I are bread pudding connoisseurs, he's from Louisiana so he's got the bread pudding tasting gene. When we asked the size we were told it was about 4" by 5" and came with ice cream on it. Based on some of the other reviews we were expecting a huge slab of bread pudding and piles of ice cream. Neither was the case. The piece was bout 3" by 3" and had 2 scoops of ice cream that appeared to be scooped by a melon baller. Now I am not complaining but if you tell someone the size and it comes out to be 1/2 the size that's a lack of training of the staff. The real anticipation was to see how the red chili melded and enhanced the flavor. In the first bite I felt like I had taken a spoonful of Hershey's cocoa powder. It was chalky and very alkaline. At the very tail end of the flavor was a bit of heat from the chili. The texture of the bread pudding was more like a very dense chocolate brownie. Where the caramel was is still a mystery to us. When the waitress asked what we thought I told her we were very disappointed. All 3 of us told her we did not want the item removed from the check, we just wanted to let her know the dessert was a failure. She insisted on talking to the manager to see what they could do. After a few minutes she came back and said next time we came to the restaurant they would comp us dessert. This after fully knowing we were from out of town on a mini-vacation and after being told we did not want the item removed. I'm not sure what she or the manager were thinking, but I give a C for effort and and F for listening to the guest.

When we were leaving we stopped and visited with the hostess to thank her for a great experience. We also explained in detail why the bread pudding was an epic failure and disappointment.

To the owners if you read these. Bread pudding does not have the texture of a dense brownie. Chocolate bread pudding is not made with Hershey Cocoa powder. Also we suggest you rethink the bacon wrapped plantains, perhaps fried plantain chips with a green chili salsa or sauce of some type for dipping.

One final note. If you're going to dine there make sure you use a GPS or street view to find it, the building looks very non-descript and the signage is abysmal. I liked the comment by one reviewer about the "old school adult bookstore" appearance. We almost drove past it thinking it couldn't really be the restaurant.
