If you are visiting Albuquerque even for just a few days you should spend a couple of hours. You will see a good representation of southwestern art and if lucky will see an outstanding exhibit worthy of any city for a reasonable price.

Great spot and such a great location. Tucked away in Old Town, it's a great way to spend an afternoon. Interesting exhibits unique to New Mexico.

The ABQ Museum is easily accessible, located right on the edge of Old Town with parking available in the street (free) or in a city parking lost (metered). It is across the street from another large museum and a park. Considering it's location, you can spend an entire day exploring ABQ and Old Town within walking distance from the museum.

The museum itself is a beautiful structure with an arrangement of sculptures outside. One large display provides a timeline of New Mexican history. Inside the museum is a lovely café and a great museum shop (one of the better ones I have visited with a great collection of curated items for purchase). Admission is incredibly reasonable but it is free in the morning on Sundays, however donations are encouraged as they should be. There was a great exhibition of 20th Century African American art to view, followed by a permanent exhibition of New Mexican history. The artifacts presented alongside the written history are visually stunning. Next is a gallery of New Mexican art that was my favorite gallery as it greatly displayed the diverse work produced in and around and inspired by New Mexico. Take your time in this gallery.

There are other travelling exhibitions, photos, and side displays to view - all worth your time. Don't rush through the museum; it is the most peaceful place to be so close to Old Town.

This is more of an art museum than a historical museum, but we did enjoy the artwork. There was a special African American exhibit that offered many different types of art. The history museum did not offer much new information but had some important pieces of artifact. We particularly enjoyed the musician who was playing there. We went on a Saturday afternoon and it was free of charge!

The museum's construction I mentioned in April, 2012, is done, and all the exhibits are on one floor. That is, all the remaining exhibits, since it seems that quite a bit of culling has been done. I was surprised by how much less time it took than on previous visits. It's still a good museum, just not as attractive as it was before.
