Beautiful place, very nice rangers and lots of history to learn. Visitors center has nice museum, restrooms, gift shop, and a place for the kids to color, do junior ranger books, video to watch and also dress up in clothes from the civil war era. From the visitors center you take a drive thru the park there are a few different places to stop and park... get out and walk Stop and see the crater ( where an underground bomb exploded). The drive thru the park is Beautiful in fall with all the pretty colors and leaves falling. Also your GPS will not get you there. There a fee to enter i think it's 5.00 per car...not sure... National parks offer a free park pass to military

A must see if you're a civil war/history buff; place where the Crater explosion occurred (Union troops exploded an underground bomb with devastating results). It's super to see whether you're in your car, on foot, or even bicycling around. National Parks offering free pass to those w/handicapped placard, or active duty military.

First of all, go to the National Park Service site for this and get directions there. As other reviewers have pointed out, GPS will not get you there.
The park rightly includes lots of territory, since Petersburg was a siege over many, many miles. It includes an eastern front, a western front, the Five Forks battlefield and City Point. To do all four would take a whole day easily. We visited the eastern front, where the main visitor center is and the Battle of the Crater. We arrived a few minutes past 9am (when it opens) and no one was in the booth to take our $5 per car entrance fee, so we got in for free. We watched the 17 minute video at the visitor center and did the circular trail to "The Dictator" (a very large mortar), which took about 15 minutes. Then it's into the car to drive from point to point. Several you can easily drive by. The highlights are stops 2 (a well preserved earthworks), 5 (Fort Stedman) and 8 (The Battle of the Crater). Be warned with the last ... the Crater is not as big as you might think. Erosion has taken it's toll. But you can see where the tunnel began and walk the length of it to see just how close the Confederate and Union lines were. Unlike Gettysburg, this battlefield is not covered with monuments. That's not to say it's pristine because the landscape has changed dramatically, but in many ways it's easier to get a sense for the battle.

In conclusion, this is a worthwhile stop and certainly necessary for the person who wants to see the major engagements of the Civil War.

This is an all day visit to absorb the enormity of what all happened here in 1864. The siege lasted months. Start at the Visitor Center. Take your time to get the lay of the land, take all the walking train s you can handle. Don't count on your GPS to get you there. It took me to the Park Service office, nowhere near the battlefield.
