Owner description: The site of the first battle in the Mexican-American war in 1846.

The Mexican-American War is called the Forgotten War because most people don't know much about it and tend to forget it happened. This is one of the battlefields and an excellent place to learn all about it. The ranger I met here was a history major and incredibly knowledgable about the war and all its generals. Because the area is still so rural, the battleground is pretty much exactly as it was during the War and it is easy to imagine the cannons firing.

we enjoyed an hours visit to the battlefield site. The visitors centre was very informative and I would recommend visiting this site if on the way to Port Isabel.

I didn't visit the visitors center, but walked the trail through the battlefield area. The interpretive signs were very informative, but there is quite a bit of walking.

Being a history buff I travel to a good number of battlefields from the Revolutionary War to the Civil War. The Mexican-American War was crucial for America’s expansionist goals and Manifest Destiny although most Americans know little about this 1846-47 conflict. The Palo Alto Battlefield tells the history of the war and the events building up to the war very well and the grounds are expansive and well marked. The visitor’s center is small so it does not take a long time to examine the displays and artifacts. A short 20 minute movie gives a nice overview of the battle and the cause and effects of the war. The interpretation was sensitive to the contrasting view of the Mexican people who view the war as an act of American aggression. There is no admission fee and it is well worth a visit - it is easy to reach from Brownsville or South Padre Island and is convenient to Route 77/83. Wear comfortable shoes and carry along water bottles if you are going in hot or sunny weather.
