This place is awesome! We were so pleasantly surprised at how big this place is!! We rented a 2 bedroom. Fully euipped kitchen so we can cook. Definitely get a room with a beachfront view. The Sunrise was amazing! Definitely a place to come back to!

We stayed during late September, and it was a great trip. We had seen Island House on our previous trip and decided to give them a try after our disappointing trip at the nearby Holiday Inn. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The condos are right on the beach. The condos are older, but our unit was in really good shape and very comfortable. We loved the side view of the beach, as there is a wall of windows looking out on it (also a balcony). Very roomy and had no problems whatsoever with rowdy neighbors. In room safe, fully furnished. This was a great family trip. We will definitely go back again!

My family stayed there for one night. We booked a suite with a side view and were not at all disappointed. The room was well appointed and very comfortable. We enjoyed being steps away from the beach. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We will come back and stay there again. We don't usually pay that much for a room, the side view was just a good as the front view for less money. My sons enjoyed having their own room away from snoring :-) parents.

The Good: Right on the beach, and our housekeeping ladies (they were great and tried to help anyway they could). The Bad: Mold/mildew so thick in shower housekeeping could not get it with scrubbing and bleach. The Ugly: Island House needs a major renovation. Front door had a storm door along with the regular door. Storm door dragged on the tile, furnishings in bedrooms were garage sale looking. Our condo needed major work. Ours had a light on the stove that would not turn off. And when the oven was on, the heat came up through one of the stovetop cook coils hot enough to boil water. T.V.s in our condo was really dated, however, in our son and daughter-in-law's room there was a flat screen. I think it depends on the individual owner. The pool had missing tiles around the edges, not just a few tiles and there was major mold problem in some areas. There were only 4 washing machines and 4 dryers for the whole condo complex. The elevator is small, barely large enough to handle the luggage cart and two people. We made our reservations 2 months ahead, and specified 2 condos next door to each other, or at least on the same floor fairly close to one another. Even called two weeks before our arrival to make sure about our rooms and reservations, however, when we checked in, our rooms were on opposite sides and different floors. But after 30 minutes, at least, Bobbie the manager, moved things around so that we (my husband and I, and our son and his family) were on the same side, same floor and 4 rooms away. The beach is close, but since it is a National seashore, there are cars, trucks, etc., driving on the beach. Be careful with small children. I would rate Island House poor, but like I said, it was on the beach.

Room Tip: I would look for another condo close to Port Aransas. Might be a little more, but the condo are newe...

Island House is an old complex, and we stayed in a 1 bed, 2 bath Unit, Room 304.

PROS:
1) Literally steps from the beach. There is a short sea wall and then down to very, very soft sand, and then finally to the beach. We chose this place for the location.

2) The condo unit was old, but really surprisingly clean. The bathrooms, rugs, and kitchen were clean. The living room wasn't that great, but the furniture probably gets wet and hard to replace constantly.

3) The kitchen wasn't too bad - there was a stove unit, toaster oven, fridge/freezer and dishwasher.

4) Although sometimes the pool might get loud, you can't really hear it from inside your unit. Also, maybe we had quiet neighbors, but I never heard them make any noise.

5) The staff we met - the men who set up the tents, the cleaning crew, etc. - were all very nice and friendly. Also, most of the other guests were very friendly too.

6) You can rent a beach tent and 2 lounge chairs for $35. We thought it was a good deal because it gets extremely windy in the afternoon, and our personal tent we brought from home was too wimpy for the beach winds.

CONS:

1) The place is pretty old. Our unit hasn't really been updated except for the tile. The cabinetry is very old and repainted multiple times, and the counters are Formica. Nonetheless, we found the unit generally well-maintained and clean.

2) This was a big deal to me because I don't usually complain about beds, but the king size bed was just extremely too soft. We aren't *that heavy*, but when an adult lay down on the bed, everyone else rolls toward him or her because of the big indentation made. I hope they replace that mattress soon!

3) The biggest complaint that I had about this beach - which families need to be aware of - is that tons of cars and trucks get stuck. On Saturday, about 20 trucks or cars get stuck (and these aren't just wimpy trucks but even the larger sized ones). Also, the trucks drive extremely fast to try to get through the sand. One idiot went really fast in reverse, almost ran over an elderly couple sitting in their chairs, almost hit a large family in their tent, and knocked over my kids' sand toys. So, definitely beware of where you set up your beach tent so you don't have to always be sprayed by sand or fear getting hit.

Room Tip: All the rooms have at least a beach view. Some are older than others so you might want to ask if yo...

We've been coming to the Island House for over 20 years. Many, not all, of the privately-owned condo units are available to the public on a daily/weekly, or monthly basis. In some ways it's more like a hotel than a vacation rental. There's a seawall between the building and the beach. Nice place for kids because of the pool and the Gulf waters are calmer than the Pacific or Atlantic coasts. Cars are allowed to drive on the beach, so look both ways before walking out to the water.

The units have fully furnished kitchens, so it's possible to bring all of your food and cook your own meals and never the leave the coast for days. Very relaxing! It can get noisy at times, depending on how many kids there are in the pool or running around. Some of the units are very nicely furnished and others not so much - however, you probably have a higher chance of getting a decent unit now than you did 10 years ago. We've shopped around for hotels and vacation rentals and feel that this is one of the better locations on North Padre Island or Port Aransas - based on staff, condition of the property, and location on the beach.

Room Tip: The 2nd and 3rd floor Gulf-front rooms are worth the extra money - great views of the Gulf
