If you're not looking to windsurf, then head on over to Gulf side of Padre Island. Worldwinds is on the Laguna Madre, a *windsurfing* spot, not a beachy/sandy/swimming destination.

For all the windsurfers or windsurfers-to-be, Worldwinds rents great gear - all under one year old. If you've ever been to other windsurfing destinations, you know rental gear can be out-of-date, beat-up, broken, or just plain ancient. Secondly, the laguna in front of Worldwinds provides chest-deep water for miles and miles. So you can feel confident just starting out or pushing your limits -- all without the worry of being swept away. Wind, well is wind. It can really blow 30+, or it can be a steady 15-20 to try out the tricks on the flat water (check an online almanac for wind speeds during the year). Finally, the staff are always helpful and friendly. You can take a variety of lessons from beginning all the way to advanced tricks.

They also rent nice condos with kitchens, which is helpful because Padre Island isn't known for great restaurants or big-time night life.

Other things to do while there: If someone in your party doesn't want to windsurf, the fishing is very good in the Laguna Madre. There is a large 1-4 foot shallow area for toddlers to safely play in. Sunsets over the laguna are a nice way to finish a day. On low-wind days, it's nice to take a kayak along the shore. Bird watching is particularly good on the Laguna side, where you can be fairly close to herons, egrets, sandpipers, plovers... The bird list goes on and on. And for folks who crave a sandy beach and waves, they can drive a couple miles down to the National Park Visitor Center to swim there. The National Park has at least a couple nature activities every day.

The beach is ok. It is on lagoon side of the Padre Island so the water is calm and the wind is not too heavy. It is not a place for swimming but for windsurf it is ideal for beginners.

We rented a windsurf, a standup paddle surf and kayaks. The surfer had fun, with good gusty wind. The kayaking was funny enough. The paddle was not good as the the wind kept blowing us away.

The guy at the counter is a weirdo, and seemed a little "off". He mixed up the credit cards and kept confusing the material we had rented, and was about to charge us the wrong rentals.

The material is excellent. Not new but very well maintained. The price is OK, but not a bargain: $25 for 2 hours of kayak or $40 for windsurf.

I have been going down to Corpus Christi to bird Island for over 10 years. We really love the facilities with the board rentals at Worldwinds.

The team takes an active interest in teaching and providing you with great advice.

Texas beaches are not like Kuai or the Caribbean. So do not expect to be swept off your feet. The water is chest high and so is very safe and great for kids to learn. It is flat so the speed is tremendous.

Been coming here for many years, though the Beach Isnt the prettiest I've seen, the flat water, the personnel, and the boards make up for it.

Can't think of a better spot. It's out of the way, on a National Park. You won't see skimpy bikinis and muscle beach dudes. You won't get filet and lobster. You won't see a Bentley parked in the parking lot.

What you will see is 20kts of wind on a shallow, protected body of water. You'll see undeveloped beaches for miles. You'll share the water with sea turtles and the winds with many migratory birds. You will see windsurfing bums from all over the world. You will meet some great people and have some great rides. You'll go back home or to your hotel covered in salt and smelling of the sea. (Wordwinds does have a cistern shower, and if it has rained in the past month they may have water for their customers to rinse off with.) You'll grab a burger and a beer from a local joint and talk about how awesome the day was.

Worldwinds is a pretty nice place for what it is. There is no plumbing, and their power comes from solar cells and batteries. They have great rental gear that is never more than a year old. They sell off their "old" (last years) gear for a substantial discount. You'll see the staff on the water as much as you'll see them in the store. They're friendly and helpful and have the right idea.

Bottom line: You don't come to Corpus Christi for the nightlife. You don't come for the parties. You come for the wind and the water. You come to windsurf in some great conditions on some beautiful undeveloped beaches.
