If you're not looking to windsurf, then head on over to Gulf side of Padre Island. Worldwinds is on the Laguna Madre, a *windsurfing* spot, not a beachy/sandy/swimming destination.
For all the windsurfers or windsurfers-to-be, Worldwinds rents great gear - all under one year old. If you've ever been to other windsurfing destinations, you know rental gear can be out-of-date, beat-up, broken, or just plain ancient. Secondly, the laguna in front of Worldwinds provides chest-deep water for miles and miles. So you can feel confident just starting out or pushing your limits -- all without the worry of being swept away. Wind, well is wind. It can really blow 30+, or it can be a steady 15-20 to try out the tricks on the flat water (check an online almanac for wind speeds during the year). Finally, the staff are always helpful and friendly. You can take a variety of lessons from beginning all the way to advanced tricks.
They also rent nice condos with kitchens, which is helpful because Padre Island isn't known for great restaurants or big-time night life.
Other things to do while there: If someone in your party doesn't want to windsurf, the fishing is very good in the Laguna Madre. There is a large 1-4 foot shallow area for toddlers to safely play in. Sunsets over the laguna are a nice way to finish a day. On low-wind days, it's nice to take a kayak along the shore. Bird watching is particularly good on the Laguna side, where you can be fairly close to herons, egrets, sandpipers, plovers... The bird list goes on and on. And for folks who crave a sandy beach and waves, they can drive a couple miles down to the National Park Visitor Center to swim there. The National Park has at least a couple nature activities every day.
