“A Hidden Gem On Padre Island”
Reviewed June 27, 2010

Make sure you get the Hawthorn Suites on Wyndham on Padre Island when you reserve, I think there was one in Corpus. This hotel was a great find, I feel blessed to have chosen it blindly. It is right across the road from the ocean, where the Holiday Inn is at. Don't waste your money on the Holiday Inn at all, that hotel was dirty and had terrible service. Hawthorn Suites has excellent service, very friendly staff. They gave us perfect recommendations, and let us check out late. We stayed in a small king bed suite. The bed was super cozy. The air conditioner worked perfect, the bathroom and shower were beautiful, and the kitchen was perfect, marble counter tops, fridge, stove, microwave, dishwasher, and sink. We made food in our room, only ate out twice. I recommend Docs and the island pizza place (I think it was called "Pizzeria'). And with ample space in the fridge, you can bring home leftovers and eat them for lunch the next day. All the rooms on both sides have ocean views. The only downside is there isn't any outdoor area to hang, nor patios, and no shaded parking. BUT - it was worth the sacrifice. You can hang out at the Holiday Inn palapa bar area across the street if you want a nice place to have a drink outside. Or at the pool, which is shared with the Days Inn next door. Or even make a bonfire on the beach, which is perfectly safe at night (not alone though). I was very pleased with this hotel, it was a PERFECT vacation getaway. Never stayed at a nicer mainstream hotel. The Padre Island beach across the street was the best beach in the area, much nicer than mustang island or Bob Hall Pier. Next to no cars, peaceful, and cleaner than the other beaches. This part of Padre was much much nicer than Port Aransas. If you want to Party like a 21 year old though, I'd go to Port A. The hotel also had excellent wirless internet access. No need for a business center. We got a great deal on the room, $77 per night on hotels dot com.

My husband and I traveled together with another couple and we all loved the hotel. Our bed room was a nonsmoking king size bed room... it had a small kitchen with all of the basics (pots/pans/dishes/ect) the bathroom was nice and clean... the bed and pillows were clean and comfortable... it was perfect. Plus the hotel was right across the street from the beach. We stayed 2 nights (Friday/Saturday). The hotel offered breakfast (eggs/sausage/waffles/pastries/toast/coffee/juice)

I highly recommend it... we are thinking of going again in July!

We had no issues checking in. The service was friendly, the room was clean and neat and the bed was actually quite comfortable. The pillows were all different thicknesses, which was actually nice because my husband and I could pick and choose which thickness we preferred. And, we were presently surprised to have a view of the ocean!

We stayed in a queen room which had a regular stove, fridge (just slightly smaller than a regular fridge), mini dishwasher and a sink. They even supplied dishwashing detergent, paper towels and a basic assortment of dishes, flatware, and a couple of pans.

We didn't have maid service on Sunday. I don't know if isn't available on Sundays as a rule or if it just didn't happen. There weren't many guests at the hotel at all (post spring-break lull, maybe).

The beach access is right across the street behind the Holiday Inn. However, I might recommend walking just a bit further up the street and crossing on the other side of the creepy looking condos next to the Holiday Inn. There you will find public restrooms and showers to rinse off sandy stuff before you head back to the room.

Breakfast was small, but serviceable (and had eggs and sausage on Sunday) and best of all - free. The only downer was the wi-fi. It was slow, spotty and I had to restart my machine every so often to get the connection to work (which I've never had to do on any other network ever so I know it wasn't my computer).

Overall, I would definitely stay here again! I think it's a great compromise between location and price.

When we first arrived, our room was not ready, even though they specifically said it would be ready at the time we arrived. When we told them it was supposed to be ready they did not apologize or even try to speed up the process. After 3 hours it was finally ready but when we got to the room the keys did not work! when we told the front desk they again did not apologize and gave us new cards. They still did not work and they did not apologize and said we would just have to wait an hour for them to fix it. Not only was this a huge inconvenience, but the hotel owner, an indian man, did not wear deodorant and smelled awful. When we went to take a shower, we noticed that the floor was dirty. It might have been a stain, but it was still gross. the next morning we went to breakfast at 9:30 and EVERYTHING was gone but the juice and the trash was overflowing onto the floor. when we checked out, we specifically said not to charge the debit card on file. but, since the indian man barely spoke english, he of course charged it. so, we had to rush to the bank and deposit money! Again, no apology!
this was the absolute worst and rudest service we have EVER experienced, and I am very understanding if they are kind about it. however, they never tried to make ammends or apologize.

We loved it! A really nice stay. Rooms were nice, location was perfect, just walk across street to the beach, the staff was so friendly, breakfast was good, great deal for a great price. Will go back again for sure.

Stayed for 4 nights over xmas 2009.

Stayed in a King Room. King bed was a very good bed. All rooms are same square footage (we saw the Queen rooms), having a King bed therefore reduces the living space. Room seemed a bit cramped. Rooms include a full stove with oven, micro, full refrigerator, very small sink, and tiny dishwasher. Other furnishings consisted of two bed side tables, a desk/table, and two chairs. The kitchen was equipped with sparse cutlery, a small number dishes, some coffee cups and a few pots. There was enough to function, but just barely.

Bathroom has no tub, but a full shower the size of a typical tub. Large glass doors enclose the shower. Bathroom sink area is small. Provided toiletries were mediocre. Wireless internet worked okay, signal was not especially strong. Room had a small closet.

The whirlpool/pool area is shared with hotel across parking lot. It was cool during our visit, and therefore we did not use the area at all.

Complimentary breakfast was okay, not great. Waffle maker, cereals, toast, some pastries, juice, coffee.

Beach is across the road, you can access it by walking through the Holiday Inn parking lot. The walk is the distance of 2 or 3 city blocks. The hotel was very quiet, nothing disturbed our sleep except for a major weather event one of the nights (a thunderstorm).

Front desk staff was inconsistent. The young woman with shoulder length brown hair was great, everybody else was polite but marginally competent.

The hotel it appears is owned/operated by an immigrant family from India. During our stay, the housekeeping was performed by members of the family. They were poor housekeepers. They made the bed, took away the trash, provided fresh towels - but nothing else. No cleaning of the bathroom, no vacuuming, and no sweeping of the floor. We were in our room until noon following our first night, and the room was not cleaned at all - guess we missed the "cleaning time." The family lives on the 4th floor of the hotel (we were on the 4th floor) - they were quiet and non intrusive, however, the smell of curry food was very strong in the hallway.

We had some maintenance issues. The heat in the room didn't work our first night. There was a burnt out light bulb in the bathroom. Our cardkeys quit working on day 3. Nothing major, but sharper execution would have been appreciated.

Overall, a nice facility, nothing disastrous about our stay, but poor execution by the staff did hurt the experience. Housekeeping and general upkeep of the property need to improve.

Side Notes: Dining out involves driving (except for the Holiday Inn). I recommend driving to Port Aransas, which takes about 25 minutes. There are many restaurant options in Port Aransas. Had a great meal at "Seafood and Sphagetti Works" a place that looks on the verge of being condemned from the outside, but was very, very good. Closer to the hotel is the Padre Island Burger Company, very good food, our service was great until our female server left for the night (without bothering to tell us she was leaving). The guy who took over our table was disinterested.

We stayed when it was Bahia Mar and loved it! Now that its Hawthorn Suites we decided to stay and give it a try. The room was clean and cleaned everyday (stayed 4 nights), everyone we came in contact with was very nice. They have a nice breakfast in the lobby, that was very good (adding more hot stuff later). We had a wonderful time on our stay. Now, if they could just do something about the weather, it rained on Sunday!!
