“Amazing Place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2013

This is a review of the branch on Q Street in Washington DC, hope that's right.

This is a takeout joint and an unadorned one, but the food is really good and the whole experience worth having. It's not a place that puts a lot into anything but giving you good food at a very reasonable price as fast as is possible. We had fried chicken with two sides--very good--and sweet potato pie for about 8-9 bucks. The other people who came in ordered the usual mix: fried okra, collard greens, cole slaw, chicken-friend steak, all of it completely authentic and apparently very good.

Let's be frank, this is not a place where rich people hang out. There weren't any limos outside; some people who came in and just ordered a side were clearly having their restaurant experience for the week, and a side was all they could afford. I'm sure that Henry and his staff isn't getting rich, either.

But they're all getting fed and fed well. Thanks to you all.

“if this is soul food then dog food must be great”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2013

If you want bland pre-cooked left over food then this is the place for you. The food is horrible. The best sweet potatoe pie? This must mean people in Maryland/DC have never had good sweet potato pie. I"m from LA and have had some of the best soul food in resturants. My family is creole from New Orleans so I grew up on soul food but Henry's, Please.......this is the worst!

“I don't know why your still open”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2012

Going into a restaurant for the first time and tasting all the basic, macaroni, greens, sweet potatoes, string beans, corn bread, meats, one taste... all the food was bad. I gave the food back and told them to keep the money and I have never been back. It appears to have that "Good Old Southern County Cooking" it not.

Henry's is famous around the country for its sweet potato pies. They are really good. The rest of the menu it typical soul food.

“a good bargain spot for "no frills" soul food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2012

This review actually is for the U Street, N.W. location. This is primarily a carry-out joint, but there is a small counter where approximately 4 persons can sit and eat. The plates are styrofoam and the utensils are plastic. The portions are large for the price and the food is satisfactory. The staff is "no nonsense", and don't seem to have a lot of patience with folks who can't make up their minds. I had the barbecue ribs. The ribs were meaty (no babybacks here), but could have used more seasoning. The sauce was just ok. The mac n' cheese, greens, and corn bread were fine. My companion had the fried fish and thought it was good.

I indicated that it has "outdoor seating." However, the seating is a few old dining room chairs on the sidewalk. You have to balance your food on your lap and avoid eye contact with hungry looking passerbys.
