“don't eat the "fine dinning", trend lightly in room”
Reviewed October 14, 2007

stayed one night at chateau. We had booked a package day before arrival for 1 night stay plus dinning. We where told dinner betw 5-8pm. We arrived at 715 pm, the front desk person found downstairs attending the gift shop, no one in shop. Checked in, took stairs to second floor, no elevator. Went downstairs for dinner, asked if we had reservations "no", when we may arrangements they didn't ask for that. Told we could take a seat but it would be awhile since only 1 watress (3-4 tables with couples at each presently in dinning room). Ordered salmon & friend ordered steak, his steak was burned said "it was probably frozen & grilled", salmon burnt in places. Room #3, floor crickey, but built in 1930, no tv & walls paper thin. We actually whispered in our room the next day bec afraid we'd wake up the couple next door. We could hear everything they said as well as see the light fr their room coming thru an adjoining door betw the 2 rooms.

While the lodge exterior and interior public areas are very nice, the room we stayed in was awful. Soft beds, broken furniture, and overall appearance was dismal. Our interactions with the employees of the lodge were mostly unpleasant. Some did not seem to have basic social skills. This really is not a place you want to take your family. The soda fountain in the lodge basement was nice, and we enjoyed the cave tour; however, you don't have to stay at the lodge to do those things.

1 Hour drive from Grants Pass Oregon. The Chateau is a six-story structure with a reinforced concrete foundation and a superstructure of wood frame construction with enormous post and beam interior supports. The building spans a small gorge and a great deal of the building's mass is banked into that depression. The first floor houses mechanical equipment. The second contains basement storage areas. The dining room, coffee shop and kitchen areas are on the third floor--at the same level as the lower trout pool grotto at the immediate head of the gorge. The fourth floor is at road level and contains the entrance lobby and some hotel rooms. The two upper stories have additional hotel rooms. Exterior walls are shiplap siding sheathed with cedar bark, giving the building a shaggy, rustic appearance.(Sorry no pets allowed at this time) ... more   less
