“The right Marriott on the right place...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 25, 2012

This is not the newest hotel in Salt Lake city, but it is gemm, be it a little bit outdated. Typical Marriott lobby and rooms, where only the pictures on the wall remind you the geographical location. Great breakfast and friendly service. This is really a cool place: Salt Lake city is booming and this Marriott is in the very centre of it. Great advantage was the on site Hertz car rental. After a good night rest we just had to go to the basement park lot to pick up our car.

My wife and I stayed at the Marriott Salt Lake City Downtown at City Creek for two nights. While the property looks a little older on the outside, the interior was nicely updated, especially in the lobby area. Our room was clean, and fairly well appointed. There were only two things that were drawbacks in the room: no safe and a bedside lamp that seemed to be loose/broken. On the 12th floor, we were able to connect to the wireless and wired internet for free. I'm not sure if this is something new based on previous reviews, or if it was due to the fact that we were Marriott Rewards Members. An ethernet cable was even provided for laptop connectivity.

As other reviewers mentioned, the location of this hotel is excellent. It was within walking distance to the new City Creek Shopping Area, Temple Square, the Mormon Tabernacle, and other downtown attractions. This was one of the biggest draws for us.

As others mentioned, the hotel prices for items such as bottled water are expensive. There is a Rite Aide Down the block that is much more reasonable.

The hotel was rather busy, as BYU was playing Utah in football, and the hotel was hosting the BYU team. Additionally, there was an "oil" convention at the hotel, so the hotel lobby did have a smell of "aromatic oils" throughout the weekend, no fault of the Marriott. It did seem as the housekeeping staff had to work overtime, since there were carts in the hallways up until 5 PM in the evening. We did not have an issue with the cleaning of our room, but it was just something that I didn't typically notice in hotels before.

Overall, I would stay here again, primarily because of the location.

Overall a disappointing experience and I am usually a fan of Marriott hotels. The room was very tired and dated and the communal areas of the hotel - lobby and bar were souless and staffed by cheerless workers. Also what appears to be a free bottle of water in your room in fact costs 3 dollars it does say in small print! Not great value either. Give this place a miss.

Great downtown location near sights with friendly staff and decent amenities. Typical solid Marriott rooms. Could use little spruce up but won't be disappointed. Good restaurants within walking distance.

I was here for a conference in the hotel and it was passable. The first room I stayed in had poor air conditioning, the second room was better, but the decor was a little tired. The staff was friendly, but not terribly motivated. The food in the conference was average. The location is excellent for downtown SLC, and it's too bad the hotel didn't rise to a higher level of excellence that Marriot's are capable of.

We chose the Marriott Downtown (at City Creek--it's new branding matching the mall that opened in March 2012) expecting something special and were disappointed. The 16-story tower is in a great location, but that's about all it has to offer that is special. There's a restaurant (Elevations) and a small bar (Destinations) plus the requisite Starbucks in the lobby. The indoor-outdoor pool is indoor most of the time, and there's a whirlpool, plus men's and women's saunas and dressing rooms. We complained about the loud music that drowned out our conversation, but the barely-English speaking towel attendant was unable to figure out what to do.

The room we were given on the concierge level was small by Marriott standards, and even though I had reserved the room for two, we had only one robe, three (?) mints on our bed at night, and towels sufficient for one person. The bathrom was really really small--two of us couldn't use it at the same time. No coffeemaker, not too surprising given the location, and the concierge lounge was closed on the holiday (Labor Day). We did receive the usual USA Today on Tuesday morning, and the place was almost empty except for a large wedding party.

There was a balcony that looked out over the rooftops and to the lights beyond, and the blackout curtains were working well enough to allow us to sleep late. We weren't sure why the housekeeping staff left us a note under the door telling us that they couldn't clean the room (it was only 9:30 am) but they promptly cleaned it after we told them we were leaving.

Expect to pay an additional $18 a day for parking, and about 25% or more of the price of your room in taxes. The staff was pleasant, except for the one woman at the desk who told us nothing was open on Sunday downtown and that we should walk over to Temple Square to learn about church history and see the gardens (not true--the new City Creek Mall stores are closed on Sunday but some restaurants and nearby attractions are open).

We'll pick another hotel next time.

Room Tip: The spa and fitness center are on the second floor, if you want to be close to the facilities.
