Salt Lake Plaza Hotel
Ranked #19 of 75 Hotels in Salt Lake City

After reading some of the reviews of this hotel I was hesitant to book a room, but it turned out to be an excellent choice. I was in Salt Lake City for three days, specifically to do research at the Family History Library which is located next door. The Plaza Hotel was very convenient and safe. The rooms have been renovated recently although the bathrooms still need some work. The front desk staff was friendly and helpful, even allowing me a late checkout. JB's restaurant is an OK choice -- large portions, cheap prices, very friendly servers. I don't know how the location would work for tourists since I saw nothing of SLC except the room, JB's and the library.

We stayed in downtown salt lake city for a ski trip in order to save a little money. The room was a little outdated as far as the furnishings and wallpaper; however, It was very cozy and a in a great location. The beds were amazingly comfortable and the room also had a refrigerator and microwave which was a nice alternative to eating out at every meal. It is also right at a TRAX stop which takes you all over Salt lake city. The ski bus is also a block away at the Radisson. We took it four times to Brighton, Solitude, Snowbird, and Alta and each time it took about an hour to reach our destination.

Frankly, I was a bit skeptical when my friend recommended this hotel. It's in an okay area, looks a little worn from the outside, and I'd never been in it. The low "skiers' special" rate seemed too good to be true - one of those where you can't figure out why they went so low. But we stayed there for 3 nights and it was great. Friendly staff, no problems, fast elevators, parking garage ($5 for guests), next to a major light rail station, quiet hallways and room doors, clean. Nothing fancy, but we mostly just slept there and it was fine for that.

Do not bother with the JB's restaurant which is attached; you can find much better places within a block or two, including Lamb's Cafe, "the oldest continuously operating restaurant in Utah".

The hotel is old, and kind of drab. We chose it becasue of location and FREE Internet. An OK location, and the internet is free, as long as you go to the site THEY approve of. They block access on a private, personal computer in the privacy of the room you pay for. We could not even connect to Yahoo Instant Messenger to speak to family, or even log into the Greyhound website to get information. I do NOT recommend this bland, dreay hotel run by holier than thou peope who want to tell you how to think.

After a bad experience at another hotel, we moved to the Salt Lake Plaza Hotel and could not have been happier. The beds were comfortable and the rooms were a good size for our family of 4. It helps to have the two queen beds in the room.

My kids loved the balcony and internet connection was stable. Plus with the cold weather it was great to have the covered parking, especially since it was only $5 at a downtown location. I have paid $30 elsewhere.

The Train was right out the front door of the lobby, so it was a quick trip to the Gateway for shopping and Temple Square was literally across the street.

JB's Restaurant is connected to the hotel, so you don't have to leave if you don't want to. It also allows you to charge to the room.

We will definitely stay there again next time we are in Salt Lake. The staff was great and it was a great location.

One downside to the hotel was the elevator. Two elevators for 12 floors and housekeeping used them during the day as well. It was not busy while we were there, but I could see waiting awhile if you hit during a busy time.

The other is it is an outdoor pool. It didn't matter for us, but if you wanted to swim in December, it is not going to happen. There is an indoor Hot Tub, but the pool is closed in winter.

We stayed here for a week. This hotel has a great location, near Temple Square, the Family History Library and Convention Center. And it is right on the Trax, the local streetcar system. The staff could not have been more helpful and accomodating. Room showed a little age but was very clean and comfy. If you want to do genealogy research at the Library, this is the place.
