Description: Winner Best of State Best Breakfast, Penny Ann's Cafe is a family affair. The restaurant's namesake, Penny Ann, and her sister, Cindy, can often be found seating patrons, serving tables or chatting pleasantly with the restaurant's regular customers. Penny's brother Warren is the executive Chef and brother Paul is behind the scenes helping with day to day operations. Wayne and Jane, the parents of the bunch, can often be seen around too helping with all aspects of the business. There are also many nieces and nephews who help cook, prep, serve and bus tables as well as the outstanding staff who feel like family. Originally from upstate New York, the Willey family prides itself on creating the east coast diner family atmosphere where guests can feel comfortable, and relax while they indulge in homemade comfort food. Not only is the atmosphere comfortable and inviting, the food is top notch. For the second year in a row, Penny Ann's Café was the winner of the Best of State award for Best Breakfast. They are known as the Home of the "Heavenly Hot Cakes", and the pancakes are a fantastic place to start when trying to decide on something from the menu. heavenly-hot-cakesHead chef Warren Willey has been a chef for many years, and his experience translates into his down-home cooking. Originally from New York, Warren was a chef there before coming to Utah. After the move, he was a chef at Park City's Westgate Grill for 10 years before the family decided to open Penny Ann's. In June of 2011, Penny Ann's opened its doors in downtown Salt Lake City, and had almost instant popularity. After three years in the downtown site, the family decided to open another location and opened in Draper in December of 2014 and are looking at future expansion in the coming months and years.

“Yummy Breakfast”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

This place isn't very big, but it's worth waiting for. They serve up the yummiest, melt in your mouth pancakes you'll ever taste. I got an omelette with the pancakes on the side and both were delicious. I think this is my new gold standard for a breakfast establishment. I just wish there were more tables for larger parties since we're a family of 6 and need something bigger than a booth. I can't wait to return.

“Killer Cakes!”
Reviewed February 16, 2013 via mobile

I am in SLC weekly to study at the International Culinary School and have eaten here twice for breakfast. The second time I passed several pancake establishments on the way, thinking about their sour cream pancakes. Have breakfast here! Both times I have ordered an omelette and chose the pancakes and was not disappointed. The omelettes were done perfectly , the fried potatoes crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside and those pancakes...... I have had nothing remotely close to them. Very friendly staff, wifi, no rush to get you out the door, just a great local place to start your day. Easy to find as well I found. Just go. You'll thank me later.

“YUMMY and affordable!”
Reviewed February 14, 2013

Get the damn pancakes...you won't regret it!
Awesome breakfast food (we went twice in four days for brunch!) and very friendly staff. Portions are HUGE and very AFFORDABLE.
The building itself is just average but the food, people, and home-style feeling is great.
Also, order the peanut butter/chocolate pie...so good!

“Best Reubens”
Reviewed February 12, 2013

Reuben: crisply toasted marbled rye. Well-balanced blend of corned beef, kraut, and sauce. Pleasantly firm flavors with nothing overpowering. Wonderful.

Cheese steaks just like the best I knew in Boston and Philadelphia. Try cheese whiz and provolone. As with the Reuben, a deftly-balanced blend of tender beef, onions, peppers, and mushrooms on a satisfyingly chewy bun.

Finish with a slice of buttermilk pie. Crust melts in one’s mouth. An added touch of lemon zest? Didn’t ask but will next time. Wonderful.

“Best breakfast food ever”
Reviewed October 10, 2012

I went to Penny Ann's to try a new breakfast spot with my husband and we were blown away from the super amazing food. The pancakes are to die for and the sausage gravy is awesome. They also have lots of different breakfast combos, but seriously you really want to try the pancakes. They are called heavenly hotcakes for a reason. This will be a place I visit often.
