“Good value & location, a bit dated but clean”
Reviewed June 23, 2011

We stayed there for one night and paid around $67 with free parking. The hotel is dated but clean. It provides the free continental breakfast which was just ok. Overall, I think it is good for the price we paid. If you are looking for a place to pamper or fancier place, this is not what you want though.

This hotel has a fantastic location, right in the centre of Salt Lake City. It is approx 5 minutes walk East to Temple Square and 5 minutes walk South to the Gateway shopping complex. Free parking is provided at the hotel.

The rooms were a good size but were a little dated and could have been cleaned to a higher standard. In particular, it looked like no one had vacuumed between the bed and bedside table for years. There was a swimming pool, but it had a sign on the gate saying that people who have had diarrhoea in the past two weeks should not swim, which did not sound very inviting!

Breakfast was good, with coffee, juice, cereal, bagels, etc. In addition, coffee, hot chocolate and cappuccino were available all day in the lobby which was useful. Laundry facilities were provided at a cost of $1 for the washing machine and 25c. for the tumble dryer, however we needed 3 dryer cycles to dry the clothes. The hotel shuttle bus dropped us at the airport after our stay free of charge which was also very useful, and we were able to print our boarding passes free of charge also.

Overall I feel that this hotel has seen better days, but I would stay there again, mainly on the basis of price and location, and the extras that were provided free of charge.

Snagged a rate of $41 per day ($48.40 including all taxes and fees) with a Priceline bid. At that price, this place is a steal. While nothing fancy, the room was clean, quiet, comfortable, and everything was in good working condition. The room easily held a desk, a table, two chairs, a dresser, and the other usual hotel room furniture without any "crammed" feeling. The room was exceptionally well-lighted, with 6 lamps and two overhead lights. Free parking made the deal that much better, since most hotels in this area charge $10 to $15 per night for parking. Finally, the internet access was reliable and very fast.

This hotel is an excellent value for the price. The location is within walking distance to the Energy Solutions Arena, which is why I chose it. Parking was free and there was a limited continental breakfast. The room was very clean and well- kept, no complaints.

Downtown location was close to Gateway shopping center and we found a lot of good shopping there.

Ok, if you are looking to be pampered and feel like royalty, this is NOT the place! The decor is dated and almost everything about this Howard Johnson's is a bit worn around the edges. The free breakfast was carb only (not a good place for your "Atkins Diet" people.) That said, everything about the hotel was ... spotless! The housekeeping staff deserves an award for keeping the rooms, hallways, lobby and any public areas nice and clean. In addition, the location of this hotel is absolutely perfect for easy access to downtown Salt Lake City and to the freeway. Since we stayed for a week, we got a really good rate on the room. You couldn't find a better crash pad, and that's exactly what we needed - - clean, quiet and convenient. We'll stay there again.

We chose this hotel for it's location to a local business, along with price. This is certainly a case of "you get what you pay for". I asked for a smoking room, couldn't have it. I asked for a downstairs king, was told they didn't have any. What we got was a downstairs, non-smoking room with 2 double beds. So my companion spent half the time we were there, out on the sidewalk. Only food handy to the hotel was a Subway sandwich shop. Close to Temple Square, and other interesting stuff. But since we were only there 1 nt, chose not to sightsee. Would have been a nice stay, except the door wouldn't stay shut! Couldn't shut the door enough for the lock to engage, so we slept with the chain on the door that swayed in the breeze. Full house, due to the LDS Conference, so no chance to change rooms. There was also "something" all over the floor between the beds. Either ALOT of talcum powder, or who knows what. Because we were "stuck", we put a towel over it and didn't take our shoes off except to go to bed. If these 2 items were to be fixed, this would have been a decent stay! Would I stay there again? Yes, but only if I can look at the room first. Would I recommend it? Maybe, depending on who I'm speaking with.
