The Family History Library recently underwent a major renovation, and the result is a technology-rich, fun, interactive experience for the whole family. The library is a project of the LDS church, to encourage and enable members and non-members alike to engage in family history research. The volunteers who staff the library are missionaries and church members, but the place is about the fascination of learning about your ancestors, not proselytizing. All visitors are given an a tablet that they take to the various activities that allow them to interact in a personal way. There are also plenty of volunteers and computers to help any and all get started researching the family tree on familysearch.org. The coolest part was seeing how excited kids were to learn about famous people in the family tree, or to have a photo made in the clothing of their heritage, and so on. Even if you're not particularly interested in genealogy, it's well worth a visit, and who knows, it might inspire a new hobby!

We stopped in here to check it out. They will let you do a few searches on the main floor at their giant kiosks, or they will escort you upstairs and assign a person to help you search for your ancestors. This is all free and you don't have to sign up for anything. If you want to open a free personal account you can save information and continue at home. They were very friendly, and they have an extensive database. We only spent a short while there but one could literally spend hours searching your family history.

We were in Salt Lake City recently and my wife was able to do some helpful genealogical research at the Family History Library. The staff were helpful in assisting with use of microfiche readers and other equipment.
