We spent 1 -1/2 days looking into specific family members. The volunteers are incredible. Check out the class schedule online before visiting, as different training and ethnicities are featured at different times. The library is spotless, but so welcoming!

We were welcomed as newcomers, given a video overview of the facility, and guided to an area to begin our research. The staff of volunteers varied in helpfulness, perhaps because they can perform their missionary service there and are not all trained genealogists. We also forgot to bring our familysearch.org and ancestry.com passwords, a HUGE mistake. Nevertheless we accomplished a lot of useful research in the limited time we had available.

The place was very well laid out and there were people at the ready to welcome you in. You are assigned someone to help you begin your family tree chart. My husband & I had done no serious research into our family tree, so we were each assigned a helper to start us off. They were friendly, but the program itself could probably do with a bit of streamlining and the output was a bit sketchy, in that it had my father's birth date, but not his death date (in 1971) or his marriage to my mother (or a lot else for that matter). Still, it was still fun to give it a go & others of you might have greater success. We only had an hour max, which is not really enough time to go into much depth. Personally I would say don't get your hopes up too much if you're a beginner, but have a good time trying.

Ohhhh, the excitement of discovering one's own family history: the names, dates, places, historical writings, but most of all, the feeling of belonging to a family and getting to know them. The Library Staff is very helpful. Some are more knowledgeable than others, so don't give up if you encounter one not so helpful. There is a lunchroom with vending machines on the 1st floor, lockers for the day, very clean restrooms and the Library is handicap friendly. A visit of a couple hours is really not enough, but the good news is there are many Family History Libraries, and likely one close to where you live. Family Search is available via internet and there are many helpful videos for all levels of understanding that can be viewed in one's own home where you can also do much online searching. After doing 30 years of research, the capacity to search records online has been a huge help in completing families where records were difficult to access years ago. So, when you go to SLC, be sure to reserve a day or two for a Library visit. Happy Hunting!!! :)
