“Excellent Food”

Ate dinner here last Saturday evening, based on reviews from this website. Boy were they right on. We had made reservations for 7:30 pm, but arrived about 7:10. They immediately sat us in a booth (people without reservations sit at the tables, as this couple across from us. They got very upset because they got placed at a table when there were several booths opened. They were quickly informed that the booths were for individuals that had made previous reservations). The wine list, salads, and staff were all outstanding, but the highlight of the evening was the food. The chicken marsala was delicious and prepared beautifully. The resturant is not very large and sits in the middle of the block. Easy to miss if your driving by, but well known to all the locals within 50 miles. We actually stopped at a tourist information booth on the way over from Seattle and mentioned that we were going to Port Angeles and the first words out of her mouth was "You've got to try this cute little italian resturant - Bella Italia".

“Our Favorite on the Peninsula”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 6, 2006

It is hard to believe that there is a restaurant quite like Bella Italia on the North Olympic Peninsula, and so close to Olympic National Park. Port Angeles is an old logging town, and even now it feels a bit industrial. Still, it is the gateway to the national park, so we discovered Bella Italia when we came down from hiking around Hurricane Ridge, and we were hungry.

Bella is two restaurants, and it is easy to dismiss it as a good, but simple Italian place with the usual pastas and salads. The real Bella Italia is a superb destination restaurant with magnificent northwestern food based on local ingredients and cooked by a master, and served with superlative wines from an extensive list by the well informed staff.

This sounds unlikely, but the Wine Spectator and others can attest to the wine list. It is heavy on Washington State wines, but there are great bottles, old and new, from other regions as well. Bella Italia also runs Bella Vino, a wine store, and they have regular wine dinners during the cooler months.

As for the food, you'll have to take our word for it. Dave Senters, and his colleagues, work with locally caught salmon and halibut, organic lamb, and Nash Huber's amazing organic produce. Nash Huber is a local farmer who grows some of the best brussels sprouts, broccoli, squashes, salad greens, and other greens we have ever tasted. The North Olympic Peninsula produces the best tasting crucifers in the world, and supplies much of the seed for the nation, so don't let your prejudices deter you.

Dave Senters is imaginative and idiosyncratic, with a great sense of the local food and wine. He has studied in Italy, and his risottos are wonderfully rich and hearty. His fish perfectly roasted or grilled. He makes the most of the locally picked chanterelles. We have been surprised and pleased again and again. In fact, dining at Bella Italia is one of the reasons we decided to move to Port Angeles. If you are serious about food and wine, there is no better place to get a taste of the coastal Northwest. It is a true destination restaurant.

“A gem on the Peninsula...Bella Italia”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 5, 2005

From an outstanding, fairly priced wine list to delicious entrees to friendly and very accommodating wait staff, this restaurant is a gem deserving of lots of praise and stands way out among the restaurants in the area. We were fortunate to score a 7:45 p/m reservation late on a Friday afternoon and my 70-something parents, wine collecting husband and two teenagers loved it as much as I did. Port Angeles is a town with lots of chain restaurants. This is not! Located in a small, cute shopping area. People were waiting 90-minutes for a table. We had pork chops, eggplant parm, gourmet pizzas and Tuscan steak, followed by apple streudel and blackberry crisp....a wonderful meal from start to finish. Charity was a server worthy of the finest establishments in the country. This place does not need the publicity, but I wanted to share our experience so that others visiting the area could reserve a table and not have to wait like some were last night! (Trivia tidbit: Laura Bush chose this restaurant in Summer, 2003, during her stay at The Lake Crescent Lodge). There is also a wine store inside! For wine lovers, the wine list is broad and the Riedel stemware completes the experience.
