“no rest at all”
Reviewed July 12, 2011

The hotel itself is renovated and it is very interesting to wonder around this century old building and see the room design, which is trendy and interesting. However, the particular room was not comfortable; the high stools didn't match the regular kitchen table so eating at the table was a puzzle. Positive - 3 minute walk from Victoria ferry; staff is quite friendly. Our ROOM NUMBER 1 was on the third floor, with private bathroom and facing the street. When we booked the clark did mention the noise from facing the street, but I didn't realize the extent of it. It did not matter whether we kept our windows open or closed: the window material provided no noise insulation whatsoever. The hotel is on the intersection of two busy streets with traffic lite, so we had two sleepless nites with auful constant nite noise from traffic, didn't have any rest at all. Other rooms are facing different directions, so may be quieter.

Room Tip: inquire about the noise when booking a particular room

If you plan on daytripping to Victoria via the MV Coho, this hotel's clean and uncomplicated setup places you just two blocks from the terminal. The nighttime squawking of seagulls is about the only loud noises you'll hear, until the trash pickup rolls through the neighborhood at 5:30am. Shared showers/toilets were cleaned once daily, and each has a powerful fan to prevent steam buildup on mirrors.
Here are a few low cost improvements I'd like the management to consider:
1> Install pay-as-you-go hair dryers in each of the shared washrooms.
2> Install dispensers for disposable toilet seat covers in each washroom.
3> Replace the soiled hallway/stairway carpet annually, and clean the carpet monthly.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the west side of building.

We booked 2 queens with use of the shared bathroom. Excellent value for the location. Room and bathrooms were very clean and never had to wait more than a few minutes at peak time. Some of the rooms/suites are extremely large so if traveling with a family this may be the place for you. Even though this was right downtown it was quiet. Excellent restaurants within walking distance. Ferry only 3 minutes away. Front desk attendant was very helpful. Would stay here again with no hesitation.

For $85/night we got a decent-size bedroom, a kitchen larger than my one at home (microwave & fridge, but no stovetop/oven), and bathroom with stall shower.

Everything was spotlessly clean. Yes - the road noise from HWY 101 was a bit loud, but we were so tired from hiking in the Olympic National Park, we didn't care. My only complaint was that the towel hooks were just outside the bathroom, not in the bathroom.

My husband and I stayed at the Downtown Hotel before taking the ferry to Victoria and it was perfect for our needs. The room was spacious, clean and charming. It was snowy and cold out so we could just go to the restaurant downstairs to eat, very convenient. We'll stay again!

The Downtown Hotel is not a place for people who need complete silence, particularly if you are staying in a room that is on the main roadway with trucks barreling down frequently. This will occur seemingly at all hours of the night. I don't know about the other rooms in the hotel, so you may wish to inquire. I will admit that when making the reservation, the owner did inform me quite seriously about the noise issue, so this is not a complaint. The room though was beautiful and extremely clean- a full kitchen, large bedroom and nice bathroom. It was incredibly spacious and the price was exceptional for the value given. It is noted that you much climb a rather large staircase to get to the hotel and another to the rooms. The inside of the hotel itself is also very clean. The hotel is extremely close to the ferry and a good spot for wandering about Port Angeles. The City is not too large so getting out and venturing over to Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park is no problem. We did not exactly encounter great service, but the front door staff did help us out enough with our needs. There is no breakfast, but a fairly good diner is just downstairs. It is noted the hotel is located above shops in the downtown area. The parking is located across the street (the side street, not the main road), but is still very close. For those who can sleep through any noise, I would certainly look no further. For those who may have trouble, I would call ahead and find out if there are some quiet rooms available.
