Rose Hill was a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. It's huge, with Oak Ridge (the African American Cemetery, right next door. And next to that the newer, but still gorgeous Riverside Cemetery next to that. Bring good walking shoes, something to drink and a camera. And then plan on walking through an interesting and lovely park with some great history and art thrown in as well.

The serenity and beauty accentuate the history. For a really nice view by the railroad tracks visit the graves of the late Duane Allman and Berry Oakley of the Allman Brothers Band. Beautiful carved marble slabs lie on top of each grave with a bass for Berry and a Gibson Les Paul for Duane etched on top.

I grew up in Macon, and Rose Hill Cemetery was a place that I visited often. Nestled into the rolling hills along the banks of the Ocmulgee river, the cemetery/park is a beautiful place to spend an afternoon.

Most of the roads inside the cemetery gates are only wide enough for a single car, so this is definitely a place for walking. Besides, how are you ever going to see all of it from a car?

Of particular note are several celebrity graves from Macon music history, but the real highlights are the incredible variety of headstones and monuments that were erected with great care, love, and artistry. Almost every grave tells a story, the epitome being the grave of a small child who died in a fire...the monument features the boy's own fire helmet and coat preserved forever in stone as if hanging on the side of the headstone.

Rose Hill is a very moving, and, ironically, living look into middle Georgia history. I think anyone would enjoy the beautiful setting. Have a good trip!
