“Franz Josef Glacier helicopter”
Reviewed February 8, 2009

Due to weather the previous few days, the roads to both Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers were closed from flooding. So to see the glaciers, we took a helicopter ride. I thought it was an excellent experience I got several great shots. Saw mostly the FJ glacier and just a little bit of the Fox glacier. Landed at the base of Mount Tasman. Saw a couple waterfalls and the glacial river flowing out from the glacier.

I really appreciated that the pilot did not do any maneuvers that were designed to make my stomach lurch. Was a smooth ride the whole way.

“OK but check out others.”
Reviewed November 16, 2008

You may have to reschedual your flight if the weather is not suitable which is not uncommon.

They put too many people in the helicopter. We were cramped with 6 passengers and the pilot.

The staff was not overly friendly or hepful. We were just another number.

We took the 30 minute flight which landed once on the glacier for about 5 minutes.

The windows were not clear enough to take photgraphs.

Try one of the other companies. There are several to choose from. Ask how many will be onboard.

For those considering the Heli-hike:

We heard from those who took it that you need to be in pretty good shape, able to climb high steps, and walk along sheer drop offs in ice and snow. They warned people not to attempt this if they have any knee, hip, back, or ankle problems.
