“Absolutely Amazing”
Reviewed December 30, 2013

A must for any visitors to the Franz Josef Glacier area. The flight up is awesome and the glacier itself is amazing. It's definitely worth the cost and you are really missing out if you don't do it. The staff are very professional and helpful. The weather changes by the minute and they definitely do their best to get you up there.

“Awesome Experience! ”
Reviewed December 20, 2013 via mobile

This is a fantastic experiance, a must do when in Franz Josef!

On the day of our trip the weather was a bit iffy so we were asked to pop back in a few hours to see if things had changed.
When were returned we were given the go ahead and Rob took us through all the safety info etc and we went down to the Heli pads.

Unfortunately the weather had closed in by now and all flights were off. We were asked if we could come back in the morning and try again or we could get a full refund. There was no pressure, it was up to us. We went for the next morning option and spent a brilliant afternoon Quad biking in the rain!

Early the next morning the weather was good so up we went. The pilot was great, talked us all through the geography etc of the Glacier.

We landed and spent a good 10-15 mins out on the snow, taking photos snd enjoying the stunning views.

On the flight back down the clouds came over again but the pilot expertly got us to the ground. We we got to ground all the rest of the flights had been cancelled again.

We had a thoroughly brilliant time, the staff are all excellent and do a great job, especially as the weather is so changeable and nothing can be 100% certain.

Thank you for taking the time to review your scenic flight. We know it can sometimes be frustrating when we have to cancel flights on short notice due to rapidly changing weather conditions but obviously safety has to be our primary concern. Fortunately you were able to get up and have a great experience with us the next day. We pride ourselves in great customer service so it’s great to hear that you found our ground staff and pilots to be helpful and professional. Thank you again for your review and Happy Holidays from the team at The Helicopter Line.

“Spectacular Glacier Heli-hike”
Reviewed December 19, 2013

With the advice of previous trip advisor reviewers I booked two nights at Franz Josef to make sure we were able to get on a heli-hike trip and thank goodness I did. Having booked several weeks in advance to ensure it fitted in with our other travels, we were disappointed that our time for the heli-hike was cancelled. So was the next one and the next one. Next day was booked out but in the end, they were cancelled too due to low cloud. So we delayed our plans and booked for the next day and were rewarded with stunning weather and an amazing experience. The flight was spectacular as was the landing on the glacier and the walk around. All the gear we were lent worked well, the guide was interesting and helpful and the scenery stunning. Colours were amazing. A fabulous thing to do.

Thank you for the review on your Heli Hike experience. It’s always a great idea to try and stay at least a couple of days in the west coast area, especially if you are doing weather dependant activities such as the Heli Hike, to give you the best possible chance of getting on a trip. As safety is our first priority, we sometimes have to cancel our flights and hikes due to poor conditions. Luckily the weather cleared for you in the end and you got to go on the Heli Hike and the see the blue ice which is often at it’s best after a little rain when it’s been washed clear. We take great pride in our customer service so it’s great to hear that you found the gear we provide good and your guide to be helpful and interesting. Thank you again for your review and Happy Holidays from the team at The Helicopter Line.

“A great journey”
Reviewed December 13, 2013 via mobile

It was an awesome journey to the glacier, it's cheaper than Franz Joseph Guides but not any worser. You can see a huge range of things: mainly rocks and snow. But the caves are just amazing. The tour guide explaned a lot of things and helped us getting through difficulty.

Thank you for taking the time to review your Heli Hike on the Franz Josef glacier. The Heli Hike is a great way to see the glacier as you get a look at the snowfields on the top from the scenic flight as well as a close-up look at the caves and ice formations on the hike. We are glad that you enjoyed your trip with us and hopefully the rest of your trip in New Zealand is memorable as well. Thank you again and Merry Christmas from the team at The Helicopter Line!

“A little overpriced...?”
Reviewed November 22, 2013

We booked the two glacier trip in early November and, after a few ummms and ahhhs from the staff about whether the weather would be good enough to fly (this didn't fill us with confidence - would have preferred a straight yes or no) we did go up.
Unfortunately we only managed to fly for 10 mins out of the 30 mins we'd booked and weren't able to land on the glacier, but were still charged more than half the full price, which seemed a little overpriced.
There was no commentary, which I felt reduced the impact, especially as it was cloudy - we could have done with a little more explanation about what we were looking at.
Overall it felt very rushed, the pilot appeared very nonchalant and the whole experience made us feel like we we're being ripped off.
Would not recommend this trip.

Dear SHKGS,
We pride ourselves on our great customer service and I’m truly sorry to hear your experience was not up to our high standards.
You should have been given a commentary from the pilot, so I am very sorry you didn’t receive this. Given the nature of the weather on this day I can imagine he would have been fully focused on the weather conditions during the flight, but this does not explain his “nonchalance”. Do you remember your pilots name so that I can follow this up?
On changeable days we sometimes hurry to get the flight away before the weather changes. I am sorry you felt the experience was too rushed, our ground crew should have explained the reasons for this.
The price is determined by the amount of flying time, which excludes the landing time. So since you didn’t get a landing the time would have been short and the price relatively high because the costs of flying weren’t reduced substantially. In future to avoid any surprises regarding shortened flights I will instruct our ground crew to state the shortened flight price prior to departure if the weather is marginal.

Once again, I am very sorry you didn’t receive the best experience when flying with us. We have taken your comments on-board and appreciate your honesty in your commentary on Trip Advisor.
