One of the nicest hostels we stayed in throughout New Zealand. We stayed in a 4 bed mixed dorm everything was very clean and new. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for somewhere to stay in Franz Josef.

We spent a terrible night there. It is for backpackers and not worth the money. The place is designed for young people and run by them. It was chaotic. We had busloads of youths arriving for a boozeup. They spent the night drinking, made a tremendous noise which lasted till the early hours of the morning. The next morning, half the restaurant was closed for breakfast as the staff were still disenfecting the place from the previous nights hooley. We were far from happy and not the only ones.

Room Tip: Choose another hotel

Hi Gratjos
Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry that you didn't enjoy your night with us. The rainforest is very unique in that we have a varied mixture of accommodation set on approx 12 acres of land, many of the accommodation secluded in the rainforest, but not all of it is secluded. We have 12 different room types ranging from 5 star rated deluxe rooms in the rainforest to budget accommodation. The photos online are very accurate of the various offerings we have available. Each room type has accurate photos online of that particular room. Please look at the photos for your room type to avoid booking the wrong room. We are more than happy to offer assistance if required.
I hope your enjoyed your visit to glacier country and if you would like to return please let me know so i can help you in booking a more suitable room for your requirements.
Kind regards
Oscar

Stayed just one nite, found the room to be very comfortable, with all the bits and bobs you need, I found the bed very comfortable. Ate both dinner and breakfast there, both were good, check in was great, and nice to be greeted by a dog, forgot the dogs name, but it was always keen for a pat !! Found the staff to be very efficient and helpful. The motel rooms were great, and yes as per other reviews they are close to the "backpackers" on the nite we were there another tour company of the" younger" variety was there and yes they did party at the bar ! not too late, and they all were quiet when they went back to their rooms. That tour is only there every now and then, so don't be put off by that, perhaps just join in ! I went to bed at 10 and slept well. Look forward to my next stay.

We had a lovely stay in a Gecko Cottage for 2 nights with our 2 year old. The cottage was large, comfortable, and quiet. Tucked away in a pretty little area with only cottages. We enjoyed the nearby playground and used the laundry facilities. The breakfast buffet was good too.
The property is very large with lot a of different types of housing, so read the reviews for the housing you are looking for. I'm sure our experience would have been very different if we had stayed in a hostel style dormitory near the bar.

I removed 1 star because our cottage did not have screens. I understand this is normal in New Zealand but there were lots of mosquitos and sand fleas so we had to close the windows at dusk, even though it was warm.

We chose this place as it was the most affordable in the town. However, it was still overpriced for what it was. You need to be prepared that you are staying in a backpackers haven, there are youths EVERYWHERE so be prepared for loud late nights and the on site pub and drunk teens being drunk teens in the middle of the night. Aside from that, the room was neat and clean, simple and basic but all you need for a one night stopover. The price did not reflect the room, it was around $160 a night, however it is very basic and had a 'camp' feel to it and definitely not worth that - $110 a night is really all it is worth. Overall the Franz Josef township and glacier were a major disappointment for us so I would only recommend staying overnight here on the way down south anyway.
