“Loved the hot tub”
Reviewed July 8, 2013

After hiking in the rain for a couple of days, getting into a hot tub was great! There are 2 hot tubs - one that holds 20 people (so you can share lies about your tramping conquests of the day!) and another smaller one that you can book on a private basis.

Strong water pressure in the showers - again, wonderful after rainy day outings.

Beds are a bit soft. Personally controlled heating was a bonus.

Laundry was expensive plus being on the west side of the island, it took a long time for things to dry.

Easy walking distance to the small town of Franz Joseph.

Depending on the time of year, you could have 20-something Kiwi Experience busload.

We stayed a couple of nights here, and were very happy with the room and facilities. It's close to town, well set up with cooking gear and comfortable. Really warm in the middle of one of the coldest winters for years. There was a good laundry to catch up after a week or so on the road, and the service was welcoming and helpful.

Our family stayed two nights in a unit with beds for five people and a bathroom and kitchen. It was very suitable for our stay. The accommodation is spread through the forest with small forest tracks between the units, which have nice lighting in the evening.
We enjoyed dinner in the on site Monsoon restaurant.
We would go back to this accommodation on our next trip.

After a very tiring 3 days in Wanaka and Queenstown staying in noisy and smelly dorm rooms, the service and accommodation at the Rainforest Retreat could not come soon enough. We drove up with no booking and the lovely lady on the front desk was able to accommodate us in our own dorm with ensuite for the same price as a regular dorm room. The included TV and comfy beds with very clean linen was the icing on the cake. Very central and close to the Glacier Hot Pools, we didn't want to leave. Great last night in NZ!!

We're a couple in our 20s and we stayed here for two nights with the Kiwi Experience...

Good
- The lodge is 2mins walk from the centre of town
- Shared bathrooms, but they're clean and numerous!
- Big hot tub!
- Nice bar

...ultimately though you'll only stay in this place for one reason - a glacier trip on Franz Joseph. And it's definitely one of the best things to do in NZ. Do not miss it!!

We stayed in one of the en-suite units as part of our road trip and by the time we arrived, an en-suite was the height of luxury!
The room was a standard motel style room but was very clean and well put together. In the morning we did find it a little noisy from upstairs, but due to the nature of the location, it was simply due to people getting out and about enjoying the day.
The staff were very friendly at reception and we really enjoyed the onsite bar/restaurant. It was cozy and warm with good food and a warm atmosphere to match.
The location is good, but FJ is really only a small village so not far to anything.
We would love to return to rainforest retreat and stay in one of the "treehut" (more luxurious!) rooms!

We stayed here for two nights in May and stayed in the motel section. Our room was quite small, especially the bathroom, but it was functional, and to be honest we didn't spend all that much time in the room as we were out walking on the Fox glacier during the day, and in the hot pools in the evening. Franz Josef is very small, so it is easy to get from here to the bus stop or the cafes and bars. There is a hot pool, but it was raining when we were there so we weren't tempted, although others were braver.
