This was our first campsite in our camper van so we hoped we'd chosen well. We had. It's a top site with all Franz Josef amenities to hand (very much in walking distance). It has an onsite bar/restaurant and small shop and there is a well stocked supermarket in town. We actually chose to stock up at a big supermarket in Greymouth but there was no absolute need to do that. The site has a large cooking block with barbeque outside together with picnic and other tables. The men's wash block is being refurbished so as a temporary portacabin it is not so good but there is a unisex washblock besides which makes up for that. Don't let the name 'rainforest' put you off - there were no midges and whilst the site has plenty of trees and greenery, the pitches are fine and the mountain views are stunning. Only poor marks go to the reception staff who didn't seem to be quite on the ball - there are lots of leaflets etc but no-one able to give any constructive advice - or maybe we were just novices!

The semi detached tree lodge was set on the forest floor. I thouhgt it was on it's own, as described as secluded, but it was semi detached and therefore expensive we thought. The huts are made of a corrugated material, not wood, hence the walls are very thin and we applauded the 'loving antics' of our neighbours when then came in at 1.15am in the morning !!
The room was spacious and clean but we would not stay here again as it is really a backpackers / campers site and quite noisy !
The reception staff were ok but just 'doing their job' so not exceptional service. Food is good in the restaurant.
Having travelled around NZ for 3 weeks there are better places to stay in our humble opinion.

Stayed here for 2 nights in early April in 6 person dorm. Room was very spacious and beds were actually very comfortable. Shared bathroom was alright. Nice big kitchen and nice picnic tables outside. Lots of room. Nice bar and restaurant - excellent backpacker food deals! Franz Josef is very small but a nice place to hang out while visiting the glacier. Would recommend this lodge to friends and family!

In March we stayed in the Treehouse. It is very spacious, nicely furnished, has everything you need, great kitchen and good shower. The restaurant was great and very comfortable. The food was good and they had a great kids menu with a little play/drawing bag. The staff at the office and the restaurant were extremely friendly and helpful. I highly recommend the Rainforest Retreat and would gladly return again.

I stayed here for one night in January during a tour.
We arrived at the hotel after visiting the Glaciers - this accommodation is around 30 minutes drive away.
Check-in was easy, I shared a room with 2 other girls. Our room was of a standard size and consisted of 2 bunk beds. The bathroom was very small. The sink tiny and the shower was OK. We had a frdige in room with a kettle and coffee/tea.
We had dinner at the hotel, the food was good. I had Saugages with Mash and then a chocolate cake for dessert. I enjoyed both meals.
This accommodation has an onsite bar and most nights they do Karaoke which was very fun! They also have a pool table.
300m down the road are some Natural Hot Springs, I would recommend that you take time out to visit them. They're open til late at night and have 3 different temperate pools.
Breakfast was included and was continental/english. I had bacon with bread which was good.
Overall I would stay here again. The rainforest surroundings make this hotel one to remember.
