“Great Value and central”

I am surprised that some people thought this motel expensive. We went in on spec and got a good-sized room for NZ$130 for one night, which was one of the cheaper ones we stayed in during our 4 weeks in NZ, especially in a very popular tourist area. Its off the main street, but within minutes walk of restaurants, shops, and internet cafe etc. Nearby is the wonderful Blue Ice Cafe, where we had one of our best NZ meals. The reception staff were most helpful.

We stayed here the night before we climbed Franz Josef. The town itself is very small but the hotel is right within walking distance (think 2 mins) to everything you need. The room was clean and taken care of well.

We stayed in a deck studio apartment for two nights and although it was clean and comfortable it was not the greatest place we stayed in from a self-catering point of view.

There was a two-ring hot plate that was positioned on the draining board and there was no real work surface to prepare food. We self catered for our 5 weeks tour and found this the least well equipped of all the places we stayed – no sharp knife and only one saucepan provided.

The deck did have a view of the glacier but there was a noisy café in the road that ran beside the deck.

The reception staff were friendly and helpful.

Overall we felt that Franz was a place to visit rather than stay, as it was expensive for what you get.

Stayed here for one night during a drive up the West coast. It was actually fairly expensive for a basic hotel with tight parking in a remote part of New Zealand.

But it had a kitchen in it, and rather than go out for dinner, we stopped at the local grocery store and picked up food to cook in the microwave, the savings more than offset the cost difference.

Room was clean, bathroom was fine except for a burnt out light (the heat lamps worked).

Hosts seemed like really nice guys. Would stay here again.

Unlike other reviewers we thought this motel was expensive for what we got. The room was large but had a cold unwelcoming feeling. Dont pay extra for the outside deck rooms they are on street level and are tiny with only enough room for small table and chairs. Friendly welcome at reception.

We arrived to FJ on a rainy day, and stayed at Alpine Glacier for two nights. Decent size room for four (two adults and two teens) and good size bathroom too. This is a wee town, so whereever you stayed would be close. We ate at Alice May restaurant nearby, which is also quite good.

Booked the Deck Studio room so we had a nice view of Franz Josef mountain. Room was beautiful and really had a nice and relaxing stay.

Location was also close by to all restaurants. Definitely the place to stay when staying in Franz Josef.
