“Luxury in Franz Josef”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 6, 2009

My wife and I stayed at Holly Homestead as part of our driving tour of New Zealand. We stayed in 15 or so bed and breakfasts all over both islands and found Holly Homestead to be decidedly one of the nicest we stayed in. Our room was very roomy, the bathroom was very large with a great shower, and the breakfast was superb. We arrived late one afternoon and told them we wanted to take the helicopter excursion to the glacier and they strongly encouraged us to take the flight that day, since weather can change quickly. They were able to make arrangements and we had a beautiful flight to the glacier. It rained the next day, so had they not prodded us and made the arrangements, we would have missed a wonderful flight. Arrangements to stay at Holly Homestead were made by Hostlink NZ, of which they are a member B&B.

Everything about Holly Homestead is wonderful. We stayed in their best suite which is way under priced by any standards.Service is magic and the hosts are what makes NZ a destination to live in let alone re-visit.Are we qualified to say this - yes, we are Kiwis and we have a B&B -we are going home to 'up' our standards. Thanks you are the best.

We stayed at Holly Homestead for two nights and were very impressed at the very high standard of accomodation provided and helpfulness of Bernie and Gerard. It was great arriving there and seeing Mount Cook in the distance.

Our room was very comfortable with every consideration given to our comfort including a heated floor in the bathroom. As soon as we arrived Bernie was keen to provide us with any information we required to make the most of our stay in the Franz Joseph area and on leaving she gave us further details of interesting stop-offs for our forthcoming journey.

We were also impressed with the friendly atmosphere of Holly Homestead especially at breakfast when Bernie entertained us with amusing stories and Gerard served tasty dishes.
Their helpfulness continued after we left when we had to contact them with an accomodation problem and with Bernie's help we found a very acceptable place to stay.

We recently stayed at Holly Homestead during our Honeymoon and we were not disappointed. It is a wonderful restored house in a great location just to the north of Franz Josef township. Bernie and Gerard are great hosts and provide an excellent service to their guests. Bernie's local knowledge is really useful and Gerard makes an awesome breakfast. The breakfast room also offers a view of the glacier unless it's covered in cloud. We stayed in the suite which was huge and finished to a high standard. The bathroom in particular had lovely fittings and was really impressive. It's a fun place to meet other guests and discuss stories of glacier walks (or heli hikes if you have the money)
I really think this is one of the best places to stay in Franz Josef and it beats the motels in the centre of the township. We also think it offers good value for money based on the quality of the accomodation.

Bernardine and Gerard are the sweet and interesting hosts of this lodge at Franz Josef. They restored this 1926 house and made it a lodge of warm rooms and amazing Southern Alp views.
The house has great and comfortable beds, wifi and it was fun amusing meeting with the other guest in the morning, a time when Gerard’s delicious breakfast is served, while Bernie gives a travel plan for every one of the guests. They organised an amazing helicopter trip over the glacier, our best experience ever!

We stayed on 24th December and had a lovely time. Bernie made us feel very welcome when we arrived, with plenty of good advice about the area, maps etc. We even had Christmas stockings hanging from our doors when we got up on Christmas day! Another nice touch is an itinerary sheet when you leave with hints and tips about where to stop on the way to the next stop.

Rooms are very comfortable and spacious, with an excellent quality bed and pillows (5* hotel standard) - very rare for B&B accommodation where beds can be too springy or too small.

The breakfast is also excellent.

Highly recommended.

Holly Homestead is all that can be asked for in the B&B market, from the moment you arrive you are made to feel special by Bernie & Gerard, and that you are their number one priority. They take the time to sit down with you over relaxing afternoon tea or coffee and discuss the wonderful accomodation that they are providing and also point out all of the things to see and do while you visit this special corner of New Zealand. They are also very helpful in recommending local restaurants or bistros for your evening meal. The comfort of the wonderful old two storey villa is just supurb, from the bedrooms with great ensuites, to the dining room (which adjoins the open plan kitchen) and lounge, you are really made to feel at home (their attention to detail makes a huge difference to the enjoyment of your stay). Gerard provides a sumptuous hot breakfast that he takes the time to explain to each guest before cooking it for you. You are also able to help yourself from the generous buffet of cold selections that are on offer, there is no better way to start your day with this leisurely breakfast, chatting to the other guests from diverse countries, around Bernie and Gerard's lovely large dining table - all the while enjoying the spectacular view of the snow topped Southern Alps. Holly Homestead is not a place that the discerning traveller should go past without stopping to enjoy at their leisure!
