“Cozy and Quiet”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 15, 2012

Glow Worm is quite clean and has a very peaceful energy. We stayed in a double room with shared bathroom. The bathroom was clean, and our room was nice and warm. They even had hair dryers you could borrow, which kept me from having to sit with wet hair in the cold weather - much appreciated! The common space felt like a library, everyone was so quiet. Free hot tub and free soup are bonuses. Great place to stay.

we stayed one night at the glow worm cottages in franz josef. we knew that things would be relatively overpriced there and were very pleased to find this place. the property has several standalone units and also a backpackers hostel. we stayed in a motel unit that was quite small but it did have a small kitchenette (with a double hot plate which was great for cooking dinner and saving money). the bathroom and shower were tiny. the bed was comfortable but was small -- a double bed rather than a queen bed. my boyfriend is 6 feet tall and his feet hung off the end of the bed. if you are tall or require a lot of space, don't stay here!

however, overall the motel was nice and the front desk staff were very helpful. the motel is a short walk away from the hot pools which was a nice place to spend a couple of hours, and is a block away from the main street in franz. they also serve free vegetable soup at 6 pm which was a nice little touch.

The kitchen was very good, large with lots of plates and utensils to go around. The rooms are comfortable but the decor inside looked a little dusty. The bed was comfortable and blanket warm enough. The only bummer was that the heater would automatically turn off after an hour or so and you would wake up kind of cold.

My friends and I had a rather rude encounter with the female owner. Some other people in the hostel told us she was in a bad mood because she was getting sick. Anyway, I didn't take it to heart it was just unnecessary.

Despite some negative review about this property, we found out that we are quite satisfy with our stay here. Our room is in a building opposite of the main building which makes it very quite and away from the noice. It consists of about 4 rooms and 2 bathrooms, our double room is just next to the bathroom which is very convevient and we did not have problem waiting for the use of bathroom. The room comes with a double bed, side tables and some shelving ,despite being small but adequate.
Of the Added advantage is this free soup serve at 6pm everyday which may come very handy as eating out in this country is very expensive and you will see people queueing up for the soup with some breads. There is a small shop selling cheap fish& chips opposite and together with the soup , thats our dinner. The friendly staff here even helped me to call up to book my accommadations for my next destinations.
Locations is idea , close to office offering trekking activities is another reason why it is always fully booked and being crowed also means noise or you can interpretes as lively.FJ is a small town and it is very quiet at night , sometimes having some noise bring "life" to the small town.

Room Tip: Rooms Away from the main building.

Probably the worst hostel bed I've ever slept on. The homemade vegetable soup that the hostel cooks was very nice. Average for a hostel stay. There is a hot tub, but it looks semi-suspect, so we did not go in.

My partner and I stayed here for two nights. Think it was low season as most of the rooms were empty. Our room (a private) was comfy and spacious enough for us to dump our stuff around. The shower facilities were great- water temperature was constant instead of running hot and cold. There was a mini fridge and utensils and hot plates so we could cook in our room Which was a nice touch. We spent a lot of time in the kitchen/common area. It was warm and comfy and had nice music playing all day. Free soup at 6pm and we loved it so much we have since tried to recreate the recipe now that we are back home! It is hearty enough as a meal on its own. Spent both out nights chilling in front of the fireplace with a bowl of soup in hand. Staff were very friendly. They had swings around the complex which I has fun playing on. The deco is very country which my partner felt was a nice touch. I think the place looks unassuming but is really great and very value for money.

I stayed here with a friend in June. There was a special going on where we got the 3rd night for free so we ended up staying in the Franz Josef area for an extra day than we intended to. The receptionist was very helpful and even made a last minute booking for a helicopter/glacier hike the following morning.

Our room was small, but still big enough to fit all our luggage. The bed was rather uncomfortable (and dangerous). "Dangerous, how can a bed be dangerous?" you may ask. There was a metal spring that had ripped through the mattress cover and was exposed, which we learned the hard way after collapsing on bed after a long day of driving and rain. Fortunately, no one was hurt and we were able to minimize the poking by flipping the mattress over. The sheets weren't very clean either. The bathroom was tiny and shared with the whole building, so it wasn't the cleanest. Even with the space heater running all night, it was still pretty cold.

The most comfortable part of the hostel was undoubtedly the dining room/lounge/kitchen area. A wooden stove in the middle of the room helped keep it nice and warm. There were rolling blackouts the first two nights throughout the whole town, but fortunately the hostel was well equipped with flashlights and headlamps. There was free vegetable soup every night for the guests, which, coupled with the blackouts, served as a nice way to meet other travelers. It wasn't a meal, but was very warm and could hold you over until the electricity came back on and you could actually cook dinner. The kitchen is a good size. I never had any trouble finding an open counter or stovetop to use. There are plenty of pots and pans and utensils to go around, as well as other cooking supplies. One night my friend and I even made pizza (there are 2 ovens).

Overall, this isn't a hostel that I would have normally stayed 3 nights in. However, Franz Josef is not something that can be passed over while in NZ and the glacier was more than enough justification for staying here.
