I stayed at the private double ensuite double room and it totally catered to my needs.
On the negative side, walls are paper thin, so you kind have to hope that people next door sleep early. Also, it would be nice to have a table, other than the tiny bed side tables, there is nothing else but the bed. Still, I wouldn't exactly say that would be a deal breaker.
The place is very clean, the staff was very helpful to me and also the common areas are very cosy. It is not a cheap place but I guess accommodation in Franz Josef is quite expensive.
Would I stay there again? That's a good question…. While I didn't find anything really wrong with this hostel, having already been there and seeing the variety of accommodation on offer, including quite a few hostels near the YHA, maybe I would take a chance somewhere else but would not feel bad if I had to stay there again.

We arrived and were greeted by a really friendly new member of staff. She was polite and bubbly and we were made to feel welcome. The private room was basic but it was clean if not a little expensive but it had all we needed for 2 nights and with limited choice locally you expect to pay a little more.... After a change of plans and an enquiry about a refund for the second night the manager was very blunt with her response. Okay rules are rules but there's a way of going about things with an eye on your customer but the manager seemed miserable. We were just over an hour outside the deadline as pointed out by the nice staff member who initially indicated that a refund shouldn't be a problem... We can understand that this rule may need to be enforced but her attitude made passing the desk and checking out a little awkward! No empathy whatsoever.... Apart from that the hostel looks like a good place for a backpacker to mix with a large communal area with games and cooking facilities.

We stayed here in a 4 bed shared mix:

+ Centrally located in the Franz Josef Village
+ Large living room
+ Decent prices
+ Nice front garden
- Strange smell from the male public bathrooms, constantly wet floor
- One of the members of staff at the reception was more interested in getting finished than listening to our enquiry and made a bad impression
- A hostel without any particular atmosphere
- Expensive bike rental considering that some YHA's rent out bikes for free

Would recommend people to try to find a hostel of a smaller size If you pass by Franz Josef.

The two things which stand out here are the brilliantly kitted out large kitchen with gas hobs, and the thin walls between rooms (we were woken by neighbours talking in the morning).

There is a lovely large area for dining and chilling out, and there is access to a patio area to eat outside.

The rooms were clean and the bed was lovely - although this is to be expected when paying $80 per night for a double ensuite room.

A nice atmosphere throughout and helpful staff.

Room Tip: Downstairs room had a wet room

Kia ora,

Thanks for placing the great feedback! I'm glad enjoyed our communal spaces and made use of the fully equipped kitchen. I'm sorry to hear you were woken in the morning. Next time you stay with us, pop by reception and ask for some free ear plugs.

Kind regards,

This YHA is a nice enough place to stay, but except for the free sauna (5-9 pm), there's not much that would make it distinctive to other YHA hostels. I don't know how it compares to the neighboring hostels (there are about 3 or 4 next door), but it was really busy when I was there. The common room was buzzing with activities (kitchen, dining room, and living room are joined together) so it was great for socializing but on the other hand seemed quite hectic as well. Nothing to complain about the location - as Franz Josef "town" is really small, although the YHA is at one end of the town you can still walk easily to the main street, where the shops/tour operators/restaurants are.

The staff are really helpful, they know a lot of information around Franz Josef and can also book you in for tours/activities. Oh, and I did meet the resident black-and-white cat, who's very docile; it obviously got used to all the attention from the guests here. I have to give 5 points for Value, as I got upgraded from dorm room to double room :) , which is well-equipped (electric heater, towels, reading lamps) and unfailingly clean.

Friendly welcome, clean room with ensuite ~ lovely large, warm and welcoming social/dining area and super nice fluffy feline :)
Smoking areas in customary wet weather are impossible :(
Really LARGE well-equipped kitchen and a really lovely environment overall which encourages easy exchanges with other visitors.
We'll be back for sure ~ might even actually share a true glacier experience next time ... weather permitting of course :)

Free sauna, good kitchen facilities and a good location at a good price. Rooms are very basic but comfy and the laundry facilities are fine also. Wifi is $5 per day if not a YHA member and there is free parking. I would return on my next visit to Franz Josef.
