“take the trip down the west coast it's worthwhile”
Reviewed January 16, 2013

even though it seems a long ways down the coast and not easily accessible, no matter if you approach from north or south, it's sooo worth the drive! try to be there early in the morning in order to avoid the crowds and busloads. the glacier has receded quite much so it's a bit of a walk but way worth it. the different angles once approaching the glacier are amazing.

“Amazing from the sky”

The heli ride is definitely worth doing - gives an amazing view of mount Cook and the glaciers - as well as the tasman glacier

“very accessible from a short walk”
Reviewed January 13, 2013

we were booked into do a helihike on the glacier - i had an incorrect assumption that the glacier would be remote and required a helicopter to get to. lucky i was wrong because the heli hike couldnt go ahead because of bad weather. about 4km from the town there is a carpark with several walking trails. there are two or three walks that give a great view of the glacier - these walks are only about 20mins, very easy and i think stroller accessible. i was suprised how low the glacier was and what a good view we could get - for free! i would recommend doing this perhaps over the expensive helicopter rides - it rains two thirds of the time in franz josef and the heli trips dont go in the wind, rain or cloudy conditions. we ended up staying in town longer than planned to try and get on a hellihike, which were repeatedly cancelled and rescheduled. in the end my husband got to go and i missed out because theere was only one spot left. this was with franz josef glacier guides and my husband said it was really good and interesting, although the helicopter ride probably isnt the best for anyone that gets vertigo or motion sicknes - it did a lot of sharp banking. there is not much else is this really small town so suggest you only need one day here.

We'd love to give this 5 stars but due to torential rain we missed out on our helihike. It was too wet even to walk up the path to the snout. We woke up next morning to brilliant sunshine and the incessent noise of helicopters taking off but we had to leave for a long drive south.

“Franz Josef glacier”
Reviewed January 8, 2013

It was a beautiful train ride with Tranzalpine train service from Christchurch to Greymouth.
It took app. 4 hours. From Greymouth we got to Franz Joseph Glacier by bus ride ( another 3 hours ride)
We finally got to Franz Joseph and walked about 1.5 hours to the glacier.
Long day..... We liked the glacier but did not love. We would've much liked to have spent this night at Mount Cook. We passed by and had lunch overlooking the mount. What an incredible view. The Hermitage hotel seemed very nice. Next time.....
