We drove over from Fox Glacier where we were staying to get a more varied choice of food than offered in the Fox. The menu looked really good and after looking at all the other choices in the town went back to this one. It began good with the waiter giving good service but after the second drink and still no sign of the food arriving we began to get a little annoyed. None of the staff came over and apologised for the wait and after a good while one meal arrived which my husband had got half way through and still no sign of mine. My husband complained about the lack of my meal which then came but the food on the outside of the plate was cold. None of the staff apologised for the wait. A group of 3 on the next table were also suffered a similar experience to ourselves. It was a shame because the food was not to bad but the service needs considerable improvement.

Stopped for lunch in the rain. We ordered 4 meals. The meals took ages to come out and then all arrived at different times. The pizza was inedible and looked like a supermarket one just heated up. The wedges were ok and the bacon tasted like a reasonable quality one. We weren't charged for the pizza - it was good that the manager wanted to know what was so bad about it. They forgot to charge us for the drinks. What a disaster.

Our family ate here twice in the 3 days we spent in Franz. First time we had pizza and wedges, and sat outside by the fireplace. This was perfect for our son (age 1) who gets a bit messy with his food. Service was attentive, the indian waiter didn't seem to understand much english but our orders came out correctly. Not amazingly good food but compared to the other offerings in town it was ok. The next time we sat inside by the fire and there was no one else there. Service was friendly and attentive again. A bit slow considering we were the only customers, but the big breakfasts we ordered were good - so much better than the insipid scrambled eggs at the Landing down the road.

It took an incredibly long period of time to get our food - many other customers were getting upset as well. HOWEVER, it was near a holiday so perhaps they were short staffed. The food was not bad which is why I give them a 2 and not a 1.

A group of friends and I had just ventured to the glaciers - cold, wet and looking forward to a good feed! We spotted the Plump Pigeon, with it's roaring fire and it seemed to tick the first box. It all went downhill from there... not one of my friends (party of 5) were happy with their meal. The main issue was that the majority of the ingredients were 'fresh' from the freezer - soggy, unflavoursome, and overpriced. The cost of the food was definitely a false reflection of what to expect on our plates, with its poor quality ingredients and portion sizes. The veggie alternative to a beef nachos was frozen peas & carrots... on tortilla chips. To follow my starter, the same mixed frozen veggies were used in a vegetable 'patty', accompanied by some pretty questionable sweating coleslaw. Although I couldn't really fault the beer, setting and service, I still wouldn't recommend this dining experience to a sole on this earth. My friends and I left very dissatisfied.
