“Great place to eat”
Reviewed May 20, 2014

The Alice May restaurant is just a short walk from the Rainforest Retreat, where we were staying. Although it was very busy on the evening we went to eat there, the staff soon found us a table, and the food was really good. Ask the staff for the story behind the name of the restaurant - it's very interesting!

“Yummy food, Cozy setting, Great service, Good value”
Reviewed May 19, 2014

We had an overnight stay in Franz Josef. Before our NZ trip, we read about Alice May in Trip Advisor and the reviews largely pointed to very good and positive comments. Despite the most recent negative reviews (seems like coming from the same group but wrote in separately), we nonetheless decided to give Alice May a try (since Alice May was by far the busiest restaurant compared to others in town). We were very glad with our decision! The restaurant was nicely decorated, the price was reasonable and the food was yummy!! Our waitress, Lara, was very patient with our questions about the menu and gave us very good recommendation. Despite being very busy, Lara stopped by a few times to check if we had everything we needed throughout our dinner. Her warmth and attention to detail made us feel very welcomed. At the end of our dinner, the owners had a good chat with us. Thank you, Alice May, for a lovely night and a pleasant dining experience.

“Good but where was the birthday candle?”
Reviewed May 17, 2014

At 4pm I visited Alice's and booked a table by the fireplace for 7pm, explaining it was my partner's 70th birthday celebration. We appreciated the tablecloth, differentiating it from the other tables, and presenting the water bottle in a champagne bucket was a nice touch. But artificial flowers are suitable for cemeteries not dining tables, and because the staff knew it was a special birthday, perhaps a candle served in a cupcake might have been a nice idea, or maybe a chocolate, a free glass of wine or some other token would have been appreciated. Otherwise attentive staff and a nice meal.

“Best food on West Coast.”
Reviewed May 16, 2014

we were passing through Franz but decided to stay the night, went to the Alice May for dinner,
what a great decision the staff were professional, food was awesome and other diners were commenting and photographing their meals which to me means we were not the only ones enjoying THE ALICE MAYS character.

“Excellent”

Good food at a reasonable price with excellent service. We dined here three times and found the food and service to be of consistently high quality [decent size portions too!).
