Situated at the far end of the village the facilities are quite smart looking with nice landscaped foliage and when we were there quiet. However the 3 public pools are not very large but irregular shaped and with the water depth being only approx 3 feet they are for sitting in. We were lucky mid afternoon that it wasn't busy so I was able to swim around a bit otherwise its all a bit boring. The only difference between the pools was a small temperature rise. They have missed a trick- no cascading water or Jacuzzi features and we certainly didn't hear the birds in the foliage as per the brochure. Apparently gets busy as the evening progresses but also if you are unlucky a coach group can arrive later in the afternoon and if so it is too small for any real enjoyment.
They do have a private pool option at approx 80NZ$ per couple for a limited time which is possibly appealing- I’ll let your imagination do the rest.
There is also the option for private massage etc which if you have overdone things tramping around the glacier could be very useful.
However for us at 25nz$ per person entrance ( although look out in the Jasons/Arrive mag for a $5 disc voucher) and when you get in a further $2 locker non refundable charge this is way overpriced for what it is.

We arrived just before 8pm, thinking we had 2 hours until closing, paid $25 for entry, and at 8:45pm were told the pools were closing. It's a nice spot but this was pretty poor considering how much advertising there is around town that this place is open until 10pm. Apparently they used to be but you would think if you rock up an hour prior to closing they might mention this.

These pools are a good spot to relax at but just be aware that they are hot-tubs made out of fibreglass or equivalent material and they are full of water heated purposely. When I hear glacial hot pools I expect to sit in rock pools full of water that was heated by volcanic activity.

The weather here in Franz Joseph today has been truly awful with one of the largest deluges I think I have ever seen. So much so that all the helicopter rides - including ours - up to the glacier were cancelled earning that we had to look for something to bide away a few hours until dinner this evening. After a visit to the wildlife centre to hear about endangered kiwis - the birds by the way - we had a but of lunch and headed to the glacier pools which are situated next to our hotel. Ii think most of the people staying in the village had the same idea as the pools were pretty packed I indeed so there were no lockers available and personal space was at a premium.

This is not cheap for what you get which is essentially three enlarged hot tubs at varying temperatures of between 36 and 40 degrees. This said, it did allow a bit of chill out time on what was ultimately a disappointing day.

Apparently there are private pools for hire for 45 minutes as well, which we only found out about when departing. Given our time again we would have probably plumped for them .

We went to the public pool, would say its a little expensive for the fee (45$), but overall quite relaxing given the cold and rainy weather in franz joseph. Locker facility was not free though. Go to the three pools in increasing order of temperature!
