“Stay in Franz Josef instead”
Reviewed October 19, 2010

The cottage is ok but the farm is a pigsty. Graham greeted us but no sign of Dora - ever. And if you try to contact them to ask a question - no one answers the phone, and it is not the kind of place where you feel comfortable walking over to their house and knocking on the door. The wording of some of the directions in the information folder is a bit rude - like " if you can't get the fire started drive into Franz Josef and buy some fire lighters". Who is going to do that at 7pm at night? The cottage was ok but we stayed at an excellent farm stay in Dunedin (silver peaks lodge) and this was nothing compared to that. It really looks horrible from the outside but is ok on the inside - when we drove up we couldn't belive that was it. Stay in Franz Josef township instead.

A lovely family who really made us feel welcome. The cottage was in great condition and the nighly views of the stars was amazing. Make sure you try the fresh eggs and milk - so much better than anything you'll find in the stores.

The cottage itself was well equiped - plenty of toys for small children etc. Overall a great place to stay when visiting the glacier region. We certainly plan on staying again when visit ing NZ. We didn't take any pictures of the cottage but did see this great rainbow - see attachment.

We stayed at the cottage mid April and wished we could have stayed longer than a night! The cottage is clean and comfy and has everything you would need whether you stayed at the height of the summer or mid winter. The views are amazing from the kitchen window and it is just so peaceful. Graham, Dora and the children came and introduced themselves which was a lovely touch and then showed us around the farm which was great. The fresh eggs and milk were a lovely bonus, if planning to stay here stay for more than a night so you can really enjoy the farm, great views and peace and quiet.

We stayed mid Jan 2010 and had a whole homestead to ourselves with fresh eggs and fresh milk straight from the cow. Awesome scency, clean and comfortable. Felt very welcomed with our own privacy at the same time. Well equiped cottage for families all you could possibly need. We stayed in various locations in the south island and would rate this at the top of our list. It is also the best value for money. Thank you for a great place to stay and relax with kids.

What a wonderful week we enjoyed at Perivale cottage.. Beautiful rural situation on a working farm with stunning views of the mountains. Although we live in a very rural part of Norfolk it was very interesting to talk to Nigel, the dairyman and Graham the owner of this farm to compare farmig methods. The free range eggs, as many as one could wish for, and fresh milk were delicious.

The cosy cottage had everything we needed and more, to make our stay very comfortable.

Meals outside in the beautiful weather and so much to do and see in the area helped to make our stay one of the best we have ever had.

Thank you Dora and Graham.

A peaceful spot in an ideal location for touring. Forget those endless motels and hotels - this is a family working farm. The accommodation is simple and has everything you can need for a comfortable stay.
The host was helpful but not intrusive and gave good hints on where to go locally including peters pool which we may have missed otherwise.
I would recommend this and advise anyone to ignore the one negative review - it bears no resemblance to our experience of this place.

Perivale Farm is a charming little farm cottage on a real working farm - the youngest member of our party was 18 yet we all still had a lovely time exploring the farm and meeting the friendly goats! It's a well designed holiday home with enough space to comfortably accommodate 5 adults for a short stay.

The host was charming and more than happy to encourage us to brave the chickens for eggs in the morning! He gave us some great advice on the best walks to do on the glacier and some useful local knowledge about when to visit.

The cottage was clean and well presented - we even had a Christmas tree and box of chocolates as a festive welcome!

The perfect base from which to explore the glacier - I'd definately reccommend it to anyone and I'd encourage you not to be put off my people who compare these lovely cottages to hotels. NZ is full of lovely, value for money holiday cottages that are not only cheaper than hotels/ motels but also offer a lot more charm and character.

Thank you for your hospitality!
Love Rach
