My wife and I had breakfast at the Matheson Cafe before we did the walking tour of Lake Matheson (which is what most folks do). It's really easy to find since it's so well known. We didn't stay there very long, but we ordered something quick so we could start walking and the food was good. We were also there in the offseason so there was plenty of seating, but it's a pretty large place so I'm sure seating usually isn't an issue. The staff was friendly and polite. Seemed like a nice cafe to have breakfast, brunch, or lunch... we were just in and out quickly. The food did seem a tad pricey, but obviously that's because they're the only cafe in the area of a scenic attraction.

It's well known in the area so you wont have problem locating it. The restaurant looks out to a large grassland with cattles on it. The decoration is modern and decent, with an outdoor area.

Food is fresh and well presented. Quite pricey but it's understandable with no competition at all.

You know that feeling that you've just walked into a room where there has been an argument raging and you've interrupted it? Well that's what it felt like at the restaurant when we sat down. The staff were on edge and dropping plates, cutlery, glasses, etc. and racing around with pensive looks. Anyway, we got served eventually and all was forgiven - the food was really goo. Try the falafel entrée and then the rib-eye with blood pudding. My wife had the turbot and it was excellent. They have a great wine list and local beers. And the views of the glacier and snow-capped mountains through the meal at sunset was magical. After dinner, we walked around the lake in the twilight to end a near-perfect evening.

After a really dreadful rainy day we woke up to brilliant sun. Drove out to this place to have nice breakfast with great views. We had backpackers breakfast and a bagel with salmon: all plenty & tasty. Interestingly no trouble with sandflies while eating outside on terrace.
