“a must do activity”
Reviewed August 8, 2012

we were wondering whether to do Franz or Fox, a full day hike, a half day hike or a heli-hike and went for the full day hike. Glad we did. We were in the area in spring and it rained a lot as it does a lot of the time and hikes can get cancelled in very poor conditions so we came back in winter when there was less rain. Weather was awesome, sunny, blue sky! Being the adventurous outdoors types we wanted as much time on the ice as possible which is why we went for the full day. We had done a helicopter flight (on waiheke) and scenic flight (round taranaki) recently so weren't desperate for the heli-hike, plus you still see the main features of the glacier (moulins, blue ice, crevasses) If you have never been in a helicopter round mountains tho then this is a gd option. For us, the half day hike didn't offer enough time on the glacier. We chose Fox cos it seemed less touristy and was much cheaper than the Franz full day hike. Fitness wise, it's not like climbing Everest and I didn't find the hike difficult but you do still need a good level of fitness. Don't bother taking a walking stick on the glacier, it doesn't really help, unless you want to poke things with it and be made fun of by your mates on FB, Our guide, Dave, was very informative about the geology of the area and chipping out steps for us to climb up. All in all, brilliant.

“Amazing experience!”
Reviewed August 6, 2012 via mobile

We did the half day walk which was great but we didn't realise it would only be an hour on the ice itself, it takes an hour or so to walk to the glacier which is also a stunning walk in the valley that used to hold the glacier. It was a fascinating experience and the guide was excellent, after doing it i am glad it wasnt longer on the ice itself as my feet got a bit sore from using the crampons. They provide you with boots, socks, backpack and raincoat and pants if you need it. Great tour!

“Amazing experience”
Reviewed July 29, 2012 via mobile

We did the half day glacier walk and what an amazing experience. It was advised that we do the 8.30am and landed up booking last minute, luckily there was still space available. There is enough equipment available for those who haven't got all the gear you need from hiking boots, gloves, beanies, backpacks and water resistant clothing, it was bery clean. Also a nice coffee shop to have a bite to eat before you head out.
Our guide was Dave and he was really good, knowledgeable, friendly and could sense his passion for being a guide.
I was a little worried about the intensity of the walk but our group had kids in and he took short stops in all the right places.I have never experienced anything as spectacular and will definitely be back and recommending the tour to other people. Thank you
