High Peaks Hotel
Ranked #7 of 10 Hotels in Fox Glacier
Reviewed November 19, 2012

We stayed one night in mid-November, passing through, and we were pleased to have booked here. The owners/managers were pleasant and helpful, and the hotel is very well made - no sound carries between rooms, which are large and well equipped. The exterior looks (perhaps disappointingly) somewhat like a standard Motel and indeed High Peaks has Motel aspects. The rooms have a separate sink in the bedroom beside that in the shower room. Our room also had a small fridge (a bit noisy), wine glasses, a kettle and coffee/ tea making sets. All of this we found helpful. As to location, it's set a bit out of Fox Glacier, away from the mountains, on the flat towards Lake Matheson. Rough bush separates and shields the hotel from the village, so the view of the mountains is uninterrupted - really brilliant the morning we left. Free wifi was welcome. We thought the evening meal offered (still just out of season) a bit limited as to menu and pricy, but appreciated what we ordered. For a night travelling through we found High Peaks very good.

Let me just say in a few words. the hotel it's self is not bad : spacious rooms, clean, new appliances. YET, we arrived late after long day of driving, tired & sleepy. really wanted to have a long night rest... BUT we were woken up at 9 :30 am by the phone call and asked to leave in 30 min. Apparently, it is normal for small hotels in NZ to have check out at 10 am!!! nonsense, especially when we were THE ONLY people in the hotel and there was no need for them to free the rooms for the arriving guests.

I am completely confused as to your claims regarding checkout. Marlene rang your room just after 10.30 am, not 9.30 (our phone system keeps a log of all calls so the time cannot be disputed) and politely asked if you were intending to stay another night. A male voice responded that no, you were moving on but that you had over slept. Marlene responded "thats fine" and then asked about how long did you think you would be. The response was half an hour. Marlene again responded "thats fine". You checked out shortly after 11 am. If you had asked for another hour it have been fine. We try very hard to be helpfull and friendly to all our guests so to have such an incorrect review posted is very hurtfull, almost insulting! And just to respond to other comments made, 2pm check in - 10am checkout times are industry standard for almost all accommodation in NZ , you were not the only guests on the night you stayed and your room was booked the following night.

My husband and I spent two nights in this hotel. The owner is a very nice and helpful lady. Our king suite with ensuite was clean and spacious. A little dark maybe. No special view. I think the restaurant has the best view of the mountains. It is overpriced like every hotel and motel in Fox Glacier and Franz Josef. We had booked a all-day trip to Fox Glacier and I highly recommend it. Check out the breathtaking Gillespie beach (no sandflies during the cold months). Breakfast was not included. The owner makes a very good breakfast if you want to, but again, it is overpriced. I would try the Matheson Cafe'. Internet was included. During the summer I would probably highly recommend it as the the hotel restaurant has an outdoor patio and a gorgeous view.

My group stayed here for 2 nights while touring the area around Fox Glacier - went on may great hikes, including up to the face of the glacier. The hotel is ideally suited for anything one wishes to do. breakfast is excellent and they also serve dinner as well, but there are better options nearby. The rooms were fine and it must be the best place to stay in this area.

From the moment we arrived to the time we left Marlene (the owner) was wonderful and so very helpfull with a great sense of humour. The hotel its self was very comfy and the rooms were very large a clean. The views of the mountains from the resturant window is breath taking. We just wished we had booked another night.

I really liked this motel. Very comfortable king sized bed and the owners really are lovely. Great views of the mountains and close to town. Would definitely come back here again if I was in the area.

Just out of town, this family run hotel was an absolute delight. The owners were friendly and helpful, bending over backwards for you, and the rooms were modern, clean, comfortable, warm and spacious. I would definitely stay here if I came back to Fox Glacier!
