High Peaks Hotel
Ranked #7 of 10 Hotels in Fox Glacier
Reviewed June 20, 2011

Its name, High Peaks Hotel, makes it sound grand, like an old Victorian manor house on high peaks, in fact, this is a motel with basic facilities and not much charm for about NZ$150 a night. We stayed here for just one night.
TV had 6 channels--none particularly interesting (no Sky TV or CNN--at least during our stay). The fridge was the smallest we had ever seen (about the size of two shoe boxes) and it barely kept food cool, let alone cold. We worried about eating the yogurt we had kept in it overnight.
The room was clean and in good condition. The motel is located just a few minutes from the center of small Fox Glacier town, but we had no scenic views from our room.
We could park right in front of our room, which made it easy to bring in our bags.
The motel has a restaurant that was open for dinner, but we chose not to eat here.
Fox Glacier access road is 4 km. away.
The drive to nearby Lake Matheson is worth doing, particularly late in the afternoon; make sure to walk to the lake itself. The Lake Matheson cafe is lovely, open for meals or drinks.

Our property enjoys lovely views of New Zealands two highest peaks, Mt Cook and Mt Tasman, hence the name High Peaks. I am at a complete loss to understand how anyone can read "old victorian manor" into our name.
I believe that quests have an obligation to read carefully the description given of the property they are making a reservation with to ensure they have accommodation suited to their needs. Our advertising states that High Peaks is a newly constructed modern HOTEL, not a motel. Our rooms are fitted out to a high standard with complete sound proofing, central heating, super king beds, leather swivel tub chairs, writing station, free wifi and tea and coffee making facilities. There are no cooking facilities as our property, having a restaurant open for dinner and breakfast, is aimed at guests who dont wish to be burdoned with carrying and preparing food and/or having to endure cooking odours from previous guests.
Perhaps if the writers of this review had availed themselves of all we have to offer and wined and dined in our bar and restaurant they may have had a different opinion.
Sorry you were disappointed.

Alan Chant.

This hotel was clean and close to Lake Matheson, where we had a great breakfast and a very good dinner while staying at Fox Glacier. The place was rather empty because, as the oft-absent but very pleasant owner/front-desk person explained, the Christchurch earthquake a few weeks earlier had unfortunately resulted in multiple cancelations. Our stay was uneventful.

Looking at this hotels website. You think wow a rustic hotel at the foot of the mountains.
Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. In reality it is a basic moderate looking motel, amongst other basic to poor motels.
The interior of our room was nice. The room was clean and comfortable and fairly well appointed (other than having a six pack cooler instead of a mini fridge)
The view out our window was of the parking lot of a run down motel. The best views are from the deck the of the restaurant, But this is the same view you from anywhere in town.
The desk clerk ranged from uninterested to rude.
Their website and print advertisement implies this is a premium hotel with a premium location. We found it to be neither.
This hotel would have been fine for a moderate priced hotel but was not worth the money.

Wow! Beware the wrath of those who do not get their own way. On the night these guests stayed our receptionist reported them as being particularly difficult and demanding being most upset that a room with mountain views was not available. My wife made sure she was present in reception next morning when this guest checked out in case of more outbursts but he appeared to have calmed down and paid and left without further complaint. It now is clear that he was biding his time to have a crack at us on Trip Advisor. However, a great deal of what is written in this review is, to use their own words, wrong wrong wrong! I believe our website is not misleading at all. The photos are all taken by ourselves with a normal camera (not by a professional with fancy lenses) so what you see is what you get. Rustic Hotel at the foot of the mountains??? Amongst other basic to poor motels??? High peaks is completely surrounded by rural land with our nearest neighbor (a farm house) over half a kilometer away. There is not another motel in sight. The view from our deck can be seen anywhere in town??? The views we enjoy of Mt Cook and Mt Tasman can not be seen at all from the town. Yes the photo submitted was taken from their room but the camera has been pointed in such a way as to take the most derogatory picture possible and this picture is not at all indicative of the overall outlook. Very misleading! The building pictured is our (the owners) residence with adjoining flats for permanent residents.I do all the maintenance and grounds at High Peaks to a very high standard so I find it very insulting to suggest this building is run down! Lastly, our tariffs are very competitively priced compared to comparable accommodation in this area.
The great majority of our guests compliment us on having a lovely establishment set in a magnificent location so I must conclude this review to be a case of sour grapes! Trip Advisor would be well advised to edit reviews such as this if they wish to preserve the credibility of their site and not have it turned into a side show.

Stayed only one night but enjoyed it very much. The room had a large bathroom (no tub) and kitchenette area, along with seating. They have a restaurant with views of the mountains. The food was excellent when we stopped in for dinner.

When booking accommodations in Fox Glacier, we felt we had limited choices. What a delightful surprise when we arrived at High Peaks Hotel. It appeared to be fairly new with the rooms having plenty of space and a nice bathroom. The room was clean and well maintained each day. Free wifi---always a plus! Friendly staff.

arrived late into Fox Glacier without a booking but no problems. Stayed here and were delighted with our choice. Beautiful room which was very spacious and clean, very comfortable king bed. Had drinks on the decking with fabulous views of Mt Tasman and Cook. Cafe meal was lovely as was the freshly cooked breakfast in the morning.Great location only a few minutes from town. Views spectacular. All staff very friendly and helpful. Wished we could have stayed longer.

The welcome at this hotel was warm and friendly. We stayed in a family room (one double and one single in the same room). It was spacious enough with basic modern facilities; no aircon but had an electric fan; small fridge; tea and coffee facilities and ensuite bathroom. The room was clean and the location very quiet - so we had a peaceful sleep.

The restaurant was by reservation only and tables could be booked between 5.30 - 8.30pm. There was a separate bar that served bar meals on a casual basis - but this too closed very early if there were no guests inside to keep it open. Both had decent facilities (clean and pleasant) with an adequate menu.
