“Lived up to expectations.”
Reviewed April 25, 2009

We did not expect to be able to afford the Westhaven as it shows as the high range in Lonely Planet. Thankfully my husband did approach the Westhaven and we stayed for 2 nights. The bed was one of the most comfortable we had during our 29 nights in New Zealand and the room as a whole set the standard we strived to get for the rest of our holiday. We had the continental breakfast included in our rate which was a nice surprise and was adequate. I cannot believe the comment which says the rooms are basic, ours was way above average and a lot more modern than a lot of motel rooms we stayed in during our visit.

After the drive up from Queenstown, Fox Glacier is a welcome sight. It's very much a "one street" town with all the necessary amenities.

The Westhaven Motel itself is right slap bang in the centre of the village. As the other reviewers have pointed out it's walking distance to the store, bars and the tour providers.

The room we had was large, well equipped and airy. Absolutely no faults with it. The owners were really helpful and friendly (not sure who the earlier "critical" reviewer was referring to), and were more than happy to advise on where to eat, etc.

Reading the press during our visit, we spotted that the owners had offered assistance and support to the family of two Australian tourists killed in an ice fall earlier in January 2009. In my opinion, that type of hospitality in times of trouble speaks volumes about the owners.

Given the opportunity to visit NZ again, I'd certainly put Fox Glacier on a list of places to re-visit and I'd have no qualms about stopping at The Westhaven again.

We stayed here because it was highly recommended and it was quite nice. The rooms were nice and large and the location was perfect to walk to everything - the town is tiny so I suspect this applies to any hotel around the area. The staff was helpful in planning activities. The only negative was that we were in the farthest room from the reception and thus could not get wireless internet.

We didn’t like Fox Glacier or the Westhaven. We booked our room six months ago, using their website, so they gave us Room 1, on the road and a room too far from the office for internet reception. The room was large, very clean, with french windows opening on to the garden with a view of the public lavatories. We were having our customary evening drink outside when our next-door neighbour, a fellow tourist in a huge campervan, suddenly appeared in his boxer shorts and started his exercise routine right in front of us. Not the hotel’s fault, obviously, but it amplified our general feeling that this motel had all the basic trappings of a campsite.

Service ranged from useless to rude. The young woman who checked us in twice said she had to refresh our kitchen amenity but she never did; we twice asked her for ice and she forgot both times. They did offer us free internet if we used our laptop in their reception area - forcing us to stand at their desk - and then they said ‘We’re closing in 15 minutes.’

Compared to other motels we visited on this trip - 858 George Street in Dunedin and the Pallazo in Nelson - this was the most expensive and poor value at NZ$190.

We are disappointed with this couple's review given we work very hard and endeavour to ensure all our guest's enjoy their time in Fox Glacier and The Westhaven. We are proud that 99.9 % of people who stay with us have nothing but praise for our complex and friendly, helpful service, as we are sure you will note in other reviews.regards Kelvin and Shelley.

Faultless motel style accommodation right in the heart of Fox Glacier Village. Walking distance to pubs, shops, and tour/service providers. There's an excellent little pub two doors down, where the tasty comfort food is better than average, and the friendly locals at the bar are chatty and cool.

A few more doors down is a convenience store with pretty much everything you might be looking for. The room itself was large, light and airy. It's very obvious that the owners here take a LOT of pride in their property and the rooms they offer to their guests.

Absolutely spotless, couldn't fault the Westhaven in any way. Even considering the $NZ185 fee per night when booked directly with them, it is not excessive all things considered, in a room with all the amenities one could ask for in a motel (hot breakfasts excluded).

  • Liked — Couldn't fault the motel.
  • Disliked — It's proximity to the pub was TOO convenient :-)

We were originally going to stay in Franz Josef Glacier, but once our first choice of lodging was booked, we decided to come down to Fox Glacier. We had also heard that the heli-hiking was better on Fox Glacier, so Westhaven's location was perfect, almost right across the street from the Fox Glacier Guiding. We contacted the hotel via email and had no problems booking the room. Check-in was easy and the owners were very friendly. Although the town of Fox Glacier itself is small, Westhaven is centrally located and it is easy to walk to all restaurants and shops in town. On our drive to nearby Lake Matheson and the Mt. Cook lookout, we passed several other hotels/lodges that looked to be equivalent to Westhaven but one would have to drive to get to food, etc. The room was basic but clean and modern, and the heated tiles in the bathroom were a welcome surprise. This room was also one of the only rooms we had in NZ that had an actual bathtub too (a rarity in NZ).

The only downside to our stay in Fox Glacier is that although we had fantastic weather the day we arrived and the clouds parted over the mountains at sunset for an amazing view of Mt. Cook, by the next morning, the famous "West Coast" weather hit, and the steady rainfall cancelled our heli-hike. We made a wet hike up the glacier instead but were disappointed to miss the heli-hike. Be prepared for this as it apparantly rains 2/3 of the year!

We stayed here as part of our group tour. Our room was #20, main door was the terrace wall facing the parking lot. As the entire wall was glass, it didn't feel very secure to me. The room contained 2 queen beds, and along with the bathroom, was quite spacious. I particularly liked the heated tiled floor feature in the bathroom and in the kitchenette area. Overall, the room and bathroom were clean and felt new.

  • Liked — Nice room and bathroom
  • Disliked — The area motel is located has nothing to do
