This was one of our best trips. Walking on the glacier with a guide. We had to wear crampons on our boots and use walking poles. The guides take an ice pick and chip out steps for you to walk up. Its quite scary at first but you soon get used to it. It felt scary at times as you never know when there could be rock falls but the guides are very good and tell you when not to stop for pics and to keep close together. Done in small groups. Think it cost about £60 booked it in the UK before we left, well worth the money. would recommend it to anyone. YOu can loan everything free of charge, rucksacks, boots, coats, trousers, poles, crampons

We really enjoyed the hike up to Fox Glacier. We didn't do the hike onto the actually glacier, but we did the hike up to the view point to get some great pictures. The hike is surrounded by waterfalls, rock slides, glaciers, rivers and a beautiful view through the valley. It was a great day for it with the sun out. It is well worth the short, but steep (up toward the top hike).

We came here during a foggy and rainy December day and immediately set out on the Te Moeka o Tuawe Valley Walk. It was amazing and had the usual number of tourists on it, and the views along the way were very impressive. This was around 4PM if I recall.

HOWEVER - and I don't know why this one isn't as popular, but I REALLY recommend the Chalet Lookout Track! This was around 7PM when we started it and we didn't see a single person on the track. Granted, it was drizzling and the sun was setting soon, but still.. this one was much more fun.

Along the way you are offered views of the river bed, lush forest, and finally it opens up towards the top to expose the river bending through the valley floor. We had some difficulty finding a suitable spot to cross, but after we did it was only another 5-10 minutes to the Chalet lookout.

I would advise you to look for sticks placed along the edge of the water - that's how we found our way across. We paid it forward and added another stick for you ;-)

I can't recommend this short hike enough. It's well worth your time.

I love the weather in FoX Glacier. And it is a great place for hiking. The trees in the bush are so beautiful and the water along Fox River is grayish and the sound of the water flowing on the river is majestic.

an easy trail to go and watch the glacier at very short range - if you want to get closer you will need to hire a guide ..
