We walked up the track to near the glacier. It was a wonderful view as the cloud cleared and we saw the glacier gleaming blue and white in the sun. A fabulous memory.

We hiked up to the overlook from the parking lot and were amazed at how beautiful the views were. There is no charge to park and walk up to the overlook but you can't go onto the glacier from here. The trail was very well Maintained and our young kids had no problem doing the hike in their own. This is a great walk even if you are doing a guided glacier tour.

Four of us, spending 2 weeks in NZ as part of a 7-week trip 'down under' from the UK, booked this hike some time before we visited NZ. I am glad we did because we overheard people trying to book for the same day being told that the hikes were fully booked.

Although Fox Glacier Village was warm and sunny, unfortunately, up on the glacier we encountered cold rain. Not the best of weather, but the company supplies your boots (very comfortable), jacket, gloves, socks, crampons and a rucksack - so you don't need to use your own or even bring your own.

The ratio of guides to customers is 2:12; because the glacier moves, and I think particularly because of the weather that day, both our guides were often at the front discussing the best route forward; however I did feel that one of them should have been at the back.

It was physically demanding but so worthwhile; Dean and Duncan encouraged us and took us to a snow cave and to see crevasses; things you could not experience by merely walking to the edge of the glacier; or indeed see from a helicopter although that must also be an amazing experience.

Because it is a moving glacier we had to come back a different way due to landslides and we saw rockfalls happening although none near us; Dean and Duncan constantly kept a lookout for these kinds of risks.

I would caution that you try not to take valuables with you eg your passport, as in continual rain like we had it is difficult to keep things dry.

We had a fantastic experience and are so glad we booked it.

If you have limited time and want to see the glacier (without paying for a helicopter!), I would recommend the Fox Glacier Valley Walk. The walk is only about 1 hour return and is accessed from the parking area at the end of Glacier Access Rd, just outside town. Great views of the glacier and the valley!

If you are deciding between a walk to this glacier vs Franz Josef and you're short on time - do this one! Much better views!

There is a bit of a steep uphill section leading to the final viewpoint, so wear good runners or hikers and take some water.

There are a few different hikes. Check which one is suitable for you first before you decide - in terms of time you have and your fitness level. We took the simplest. It was an easy walk from the entrance to the terminal (snub or nose). Even that, we could not go near the terminal - we had to settle with taking photo from afar and use the zoom feature of the camera.
Between fiord land and glacier, I prefer fiord land. Maybe because I didn't do the ice hiking. You need the whole day to do ice hiking and you need fitness.
