"the last kitchen" is located at the southern end of the small town of Fox Glacier, within 5 minutes walking from at least 5 hotels near the town center. The restaurant replaced the Plateau Cafe and Bar. We ducked in early on a rainy evening, and noticed some had to wait for a table later on. Food was quite satisfying, and we had our first broccoli-blue cheese soup, which seemed to be a relative staple in Southern New Zealand. Fish entre and mushroom pasta were great. Enjoyable atmosphere. Almost went two nights in a row, but we tried a different place for variety. We wished we had returned to the last kitchen. It is not exactly big-city eating, but worth a visit if you are passing through. Other travelers raved about Matheson, but we lacked a car to get there, and the local shuttle ($10/person for the 6-mile trip) was not available for us that night.
