What a surprise to find this beautiful place just up the road from the glaciers! It's not really a 'beach', it is covered in smooth stones and driftwood. It is well worth the visit just to appreciate the contrast to the already contrasting combination of tropical & glacial areas that the region has to offer.

Gillespies Beach itself was amazing. It was gorgeous and beautiful.

We made the mistake of doing the 4 hour walk to see the seals (2 hours there and 2 hours back) and the seals weren't there. I had asked around town, and even in a TripAdvisor Forum, and no one seemed quite sure when the seals were around. We had helihiked that morning and decided to try to see the seals in the afternoon. The first part of the 2 hour walk there was gorgeous. The beach, lagoon and first part of the forsest walk are great. But 1.5 hours in the forest got a little boring. Plus, it was very, very muddy which I wished I had known before I went. I was jumping through mud and finally gave up and just walked in it. Had the seals been there, it would have been worth it. Guess I can't ask too much from wild animals ...

We had a short stop here recently. We left it too late in the afternoon to really have lots of time but what we did was really nice and enjoyable. Be aware that in the late afternoon the road in really suffers from light strike and can make driving nervous.

Any once you get there the clouds peal off and the mountains are laid out in front of you. It makes up for it all.

The scenery is absolutely beautiful, with views of Mount Cook on one side and the Tasman Sea lapping at your toes on the other. The ride to the beach is even scenic, as you travel through the rainforest on a windy gravel road. Totally secluded--we did the 3+ hour round trip to the seal colony (very fun to sit and watch them!) and saw only two other people the entire time. It is not always easy walking, so it may not be suitable for those with younger kids or more "mature folks." Be aware that there can be a ton of sand flies in the parking lot and right where the lake meets the sea, but they weren't prevalent anywhere else on the walk. Plus, if the wind is blowing, they're not a problem. Finished the afternoon off by stopping at Lake Matheson Cafe for a bottle of wine and a light dinner--highly recommend. It was a fantastic afternoon!
