Ropatini's Homestay B & B
Ranked #4 of 9 Fox Glacier B&B and Inns
Reviewed November 29, 2012 via mobile

Stayed two nights based on all the reviews here. We must say that the reviews here overrate this place. It's functional but that's about it. The rooms are okay. Wifi doesn't work in the external rooms.

The breakfast is most average - toast, yoghurt and fruit. At a B&B, you expect a bit more effort.

New Zealand has some amazing B&Bs and this one is comparatively disappointing.

There is very limited choice of accommodation, around the glacier areas on New Zealands southern, west coast and at peak times, it naturally gets more difficult to find suitable accommodation. The best you can hope for is somewhere comfortable and warm, which we found at this little husband and wife run bed and breakfast property in the township of Fox Glacier. The couple were very friendly, gracious hosts, who went out of their way to welcome us into their home and make our stay comfortable. I did find our hosts constant presence, a little to overwhelming for my liking personally (as I prefer more privacy), but this was not a flaw in service by any means... just something that brought me out of my normal comfort zones. The couple shared coffee with us in the evening after we dined out in town, and joined us for breakfast. They were very informative with the history of the area and geographic information and travel tips. Rooms are very average, but comfortable and private. You share bathroom with other guests and on our stay there was one other couple, so this was not an issue at all. Overall a very friendly comfortable little property and if you love lots of attention and conversation with your hosts, you'll get it here. A lovely, warm, helpful couple!

We had a very warm welcome and felt very very for our night at Ropatini’s Homestay. Even if it was just before Christmas and our hosts had family coming, we had dinner with them, and it was such a great moment. The dishes where delicious and we had a very good time. Trish arranged for us a helicopter tour around Mt Cook for next morning. Breakfast next morning was great. We stared by a tour of Lake Matheson before breakfast and we had then a delicious breakfast. Lovely stay.

We arrived here after travelling from Christchurch through magnificent scenery but were very tired. Once we arrived here, wow, what a nice surprise!
We were met by Trish & Colin who greeted like long lost friends. We immediately refreshed with a cuppa and delicious home baking and made to feel truly welcome.
After an hours nap and freshen up we were treated to a delicious home cooked meal and interesting chat around their fabulous table.
Never visiting Fox Glacier before Collin & Trish were so informative and helpful on what to see & do in our short 2 day visit. Makings bookings for us seemed effortless because of their local knowledge.
We stayed in an outdoor studio with a super comfortable bed and meticulously clean room and ensuite bathroom.
What a fabulous view to open the curtains after a great night's sleep and view Mt Cook from our room - it was paradise!
In our short stay we realised we were not just guests but a true friendship was forged - one we will never forget.
If you plan to stay at a B&B at Fox Glacier, this is the best!

Room Tip: Studio units are best as it is just paradise looking out at Mt Cook.

We arrived at this B&B and were very disappointed. Although the property received very high ratings from Trip Advisor guests, we were NOT impressed and really can't figure out why the B&B has received such high ratings in the past. The rooms / cabins are dingy and in desperate need of an update. The exterior of the property was not welcoming and looked a bit like a garage sale. We also found out the breakfast is only continental, i.e. nothing hot. We stayed at several B&B's during our trip to New Zealand and not providing a hot breakfast makes for poor marks in our book. The rate was still in excess of NZ$100 during the low season. We do not recommend this B&B.

Trish and Collin gave us a warm welcome to the accommodation and Trish provided one of the most substantial meals we ate during our trip; dish after dish arrived. And eating at Collin's incredible table made this even more special. We wish we could have eaten more of Trish's wonderful vegetables but the chicken and lamb was also so tempting. Trish arranged a helicopter trip for us for 10 the following morning and then as we were sitting down for breakfast, with Mount Cook visible she got a call to say we had to go straight away as the weather was closing in. So we just got in a heli ride and a landing on the glaciers. We didn't do Trish's lovely breakfast justice the first morning, but certainly did the second and third. Wonderful hosts and lovely accommodation.

The breakfast and view of Mt Cook from the beautiful breakfast spread were amazing! It was also nice to watch a rugby match with Collin, Trish and two other guests sipping some lovely local wine they offered. It was one of the few locations we stayed that had free wireless internet, so we could catch up with friends/family back home. We stayed in the main house and it might have been one of the best night's sleep I got on the trip. Colin also provided some very helpful suggestions for stops along our drive the next day.
