“The Loft for perfection!”
Reviewed February 28, 2010

The Loft is a peaceful semi rural location with nearby vineyards and dine out opportunities. Best of all - the quality furnishings and magical touches! We will be returning to this wonderful spot.

After travelling the North Island for 2 weeks we arrived at Hillsfield House where we had a very warm welcome. In a lovely atmosphere we were spoilt for two days. All the little details in the room and Jo’s caring for us had no limits. Advice of where to dine and of vineyards in the area meant a lot to us. The breakfast there was the best we got during the entire stay in NZ for 4 weeks. We felt by instinct, that none of the following B&B could beat this one and we were right. We can highly recommend Hillsfield House to anyone and will sure make a detour to stay here again if we get the chance of going to NZ once more.

A summary to start with - if you're touring Marlborough vineries or just visiting Renwick, STAY HERE!!!!!

We arrived in Renwick unsure of what to expect - we'd always done hotels on our past trips so weren't sure what to expect. Boy did this set us straight!

Sure, Hillsfield House is a lovely, modern home from home (a converted outhouse/garage roof space with huge comfortable bed, seating area with tv, stereo and fridge and modern bathroom). And sure it's ideally located in the middle of more wineries than you could ever hope to sample. But all these amazing features are not what makes this place - it's the litle touches.

- We arrived to find soothing music playing on the stereo and homemade shortbread (we're Scottish!) and local wine waiting for us on the table. Jo gave us a warm welcome and pointed us in the direction of a range of magazines and books that showcased the local area.
- We had brought some food with us to have a quiet dinner and asked Jo if we could eat it on the grass outside. Instead, she told us to come down in ten minutes, by which stage she'd set up the outside table with a tablecloth, plates and cutlery!!
- The free, modern bikes on offer made getting around the wineries so easy.
- The breakfast each morning (toast, cereal, tea, coffee, fruit, freshly squeezed juice - we just couldn't do it justice!!) was superb.
- And on the final morning, as Jo brought us our breakfast, she noticed some wet clothes on the heated rail that we'd got wet the previous night. She whipped them away and had them dried and folded before we'd finished eating - truely above and beyond!!

Oh, and we were only there for 2 nights.........!!

It really was the little things that made us love this place. The accommodation itself was of a very high standard and was ideally placed in Renwick. But it's the welcome and attention to detail from the owners that we'll not forget - and please note that they weren't overbearing or over the top - they managed to get it just right. We were asked when we left what they could do to improve - my honest answer was "nothing - keep doing what you're doing".

To be fair, my review probably doesn't do this place justice - just go and stay and find out for yourself!!

We arrived as guests and left as friends. Excellent caring service that went the extra mile - literally as we were dropped off in town and picked up again at no cost (better than a taxi).

Quality furnishings, comfy bed and superb breakfast. The homemade croissants are to die for!

Thanks Jo and Steve we will be back!

This B&B is a charming place. the hosts were helpful and friendly. They make your stay so enjoyable. The room is equiped with lovely furniture and bath. There is room for relaxation on a sofa with sherry, coffee, or tea and provided deserts. The provided bikes and helmets make it possible to ride to several vineyards for a taste of the vineyard's products.
Service was excellent. We purchased cheese, venison salami and wine at a farmer's market. The hostess provided us with a cutting board and knife so we could have a quiet relaxing evening. She even provided bandaids when I cut myself.

The Hillsfield House was one of our three favourite B&Bs during our three week holidays in New Zealand. The hosts are extremely nice and helpful - the breakfast contains a marvellous fruit platter. The (only) room is located in a separate buidling and very cosy. The B&B is located right between wonderful wineries. We liked the area even more than Blenheim (where we stayed the following day). Highly recommended B&B!

From the moment we arrived we felt pampered. Jo welcomed us with afternoon tea in our beautifully decorated room - soft colours, relaxing music , a very comfortable bed, everything we could want even down to the lovely soap and toiletries - we could not ask for more. We stayed three nights and Jo was helpful in suggesting restaurants and activites. She even lent us bikes so that we could pedal around the wineries. These were our last three days in New Zealand and they were perfect. Hillsview House is the perfect place to base your stay in the Marlborough Wine region.
