“Heartwarming countryside stay - extremely refreshing if you are from the city”
Reviewed December 10, 2012 via mobile

Stayed in this cute little countryside B&B for 4 nights during our Marlborough vineyard exploratory trip. All countryside elements were present - animals (horses, chickens, cats, a funny looking sheeplike animal i cant remember the name of), serenity, sleepy and an extremely hospitable owner.

Place was so quiet and serene that I just couldn't stop sleeping. How's that coming from someone oftentimes suffering from insomnia when living the big city life.

Owner (Jo) was extremely hospitable. Though breakfast was part of the package, she went out of her way to make sure we were always full from breakfast, cut really fresh and sweet fruits for us and left delicious tea time sweets for us in the form of a carrot cake. She provided us complementary nice good quality bicycles for use in our vineyard exploratory tour. That saved us some good money as avg rental costs per bike was 30-40 nzd per day. Her genuine end-2-end hospitality shone through and exceeded our expectations as she kindly initiated and fetched us from/to our renwick coach dropoff point, first dinner place and airport. This ensured we never had to take a taxi in this friendly countryside town.

All in all, if you want to escape from city life, this cute little b&b is the perfect antidote and shows you why some people are willing to leave it all behind and relocate to the good ol' countryside.

We arrived in sunny Renwick and drove down the impressive drive to Hillsfield house. Warmly greeted by some Alpaca and Jo the owner we went into her luxury accommodation to find something not out of place in a Mandarin Oriental Suite. It is rare that you cannot fault accommodation but Jo has thought of everything and we cannot speak to highly of the comfort and thoughtfulness that has gone into the room.
Location is idyllic with a short walk to the excellent Forest Hills Winery as Hillsfield is perfectly located for exploring the abundant local wineries. We decided to take Jo's offer on touring by bike and she helpfully got everything ready before the fear of cycling after a 25 year break put me off.
Breakfast is a stunning event - when have you ever got freshly cooked croissants and home made preserves - its a first for us and we loved it.
Overall Hillsfield is a bit of a hidden gem and well deserves its No.1 rating.
Jo is such a great host and she has created something that is so special we will definitely be returning. Thanks!

Room Tip: With 2 rooms to choose from I think either is as good as the other. Downstairs would be better if yo...

The other reviewers have said it all. Jo and steve are great. The loft is wonderfully appointed and modern, the use of bikes to tour the myriad of nearby wineries is helpful. It's the perfect place to stay in the Marlborough region.

Consistent theme with the other reviews: darling rooms, wonderful proprietors (Jo and Steve), delicious food, warm environment, beautiful backyard English garden, walking distance to many wineries (or a short bike ride). I don't have a bad word to say about our 2 day stay. :) Felt like we were visiting family. I would most definitely go back! (Mary and Mark from Chicago)

Room Tip: only 2 rooms to choose between. i like the architectural details of the room upstairs, but both wer...

My partner and I stayed one night in the Loft Room at Hillsfield House and loved it. We couldn't quite believe how amazing all the reviews were on TripAdvisor before we arrived, but now understand why everyone raves about this place, it's gorgeous. Room was spotless and beautifully decorated. Loved all the little touches - yummy cookies, chilled water in the fridge (which is a decent size so you can chill all the bottles you buy at the cellar doors!), flowers on the pillow and lovely toiletries in the bathroom. Jo and Steve were fantastic hosts, lending us bikes to visit the vineyards and booking a table for us for dinner. Breakfast was also excellent with fresh fruit, croissants and great coffee. I cannot recommend this place highly enough - just wished we could have stayed longer, we had a wonderful relaxing time.

We were lucky enough to spend 3 nights at Hillsfield House in the Loft Room. The room was immaculate yet still warm and inviting. It is the best bed I've ever slept in!!! The breakfast is amazing (don't go past the croissants...diet or no diet!) The hostess with the mostest is Jo...many thanks for her extra effort finding information for the next leg of our journey, or for recommending places to eat or wineries to visit. It was the best place we stayed on our trip!!! The location is perfect for those looking to do wine tours, you're right in the heart of wine country. You'll want for nothing. The peace and quiet is wonderful, it was such a joy just to relax and enjoy the sunshine and surrounds after such a fast paced start to our holiday. Cannot thank our hosts enough for their warmth, hospitality and kindness :)

Room Tip: I'm sure either room would be amazing, The Loft had the best bed I'd ever slept in, the view...

We stayed here while touring New Zealand. We have stayed at many B&B's and I have to say this is one of the best I've ever stayed at. The room is very inviting, beautifully decorated and cozy. It was just what we needed after all the hours driving on the road. The shower was great all the way to the bed with a down comforter. The best part was the breakfast was so delicious. It looked so pretty. We wanted to stay longer! Jo makes the best cookies ever. Cold water in the fridge is the best after a day spent drinking in wine country. We need more B&B's like this in the US.

Room Tip: Sleep upstairs and enjoy the birds and vineyard views.
