“Shame about the dirt road, at least the trip there nice”
Reviewed October 21, 2012

Disappointed we couldn't get out to it due to unsealed road&hire-car restrictions but the drive through spekky Lindis pass made it all worthwhile. Sometimes the pass is closed so check at service stations before you set off. Even if you had to turn back to CHCH or QTown directions the drive will have been enjoyable as the government roads are in very good condition (when no rock-fall/snow!)

“Otherworldly”
Reviewed October 16, 2012

I Iove to discover superb natural features a short detour from the main drag. The Clay Cliffs is a 10 km detour signposted from SH 8, 5 km north of Omarama. The dirt road is rough but okay. The cliffs are a jumble of pinnacles and high angular ridges exposed by a 100 m lift of the Ostler Fault. A $5 charge, deposited in a honesty box is required before negotiating the final 4 km. Local farmers have jointly preserved the scenic features under the QEII Open Space Covenant. The final trail is a walking track. Ensure you venture to the end of the trail, squeezing through a narrow cleft. Beyond this point is an otherworldly spectacle of pinnacles in a variety of shades. It appears like a creation of film director Peter Jackson's Weta Workshop. Morning light is best for photography. The cliffs can be visited while travelling to or from Queenstown. But best to combine a visit with a stopover in nearby Omarama.

The cleffs are impressive. Once you are in you forgot the rest. The place is quite small, but just so impressive!

“Very cool”
Reviewed July 17, 2012

Popped in on our way to Omarama and thought this area was great - the shapes and sizes are so interesting. Keep walking and you can walk inside them. Drive on dirt road to get there and the last couple of meters you have to walk can be muddy, so wear appropriate shoes.

Don't need more than 30 mins.

There is a charge for this - you need to pay $5 per car, at the Omarama Hot Tubs.

No food or toilets available.

“Go for sunrise (not sunset as we did).”
Reviewed July 8, 2012

Really bizarre place. Keep exploring as far as you can go. It gets quite eerie.
