“Excellent value and customer service”
Reviewed March 1, 2012

We stayed here as a stop-off between Motueka and Christchurch, travelling with our 3 month old son. Having travelled up to Motueka via Kaikoura and Blenheim, we wanted to return through the Kahurangi national park and the beautiful Lewis Pass. We'd heard bad things about Springs Junction and Maruia Springs, so chose Murchison as our half-way point. It's a small town, but beautifully located amongst forested hills. We wanted somewhere clean and inexpensive, and this is exactly what we got with Mataki Motel. We had a standard unit, with a double bed, a clean en-suite bathroom and a great shower. The room wasn't palatial by any means, but served its purpose well.

What particularly struck me were the little things - such as the bucket of water and sponge/squeegee in the carpark for a much needed cleaning of our car windscreen. Simple, low-cost, but useful for guests, and showing a customer-oriented attitude lacking from many - generally larger - hotels/motels. We were unable to connect to the free WiFi - but that may have been a fault with our hardware - and had we alerted reception no doubt they would have tried to resolve the issue.

All in all, a very nice place to stay, with excellent value and customer service.

We ended up here after our booking at the local holiday park was overlooked and left us without accommodation at the start of our family holiday. While it looks a little dated from the outside we were very happy with the unit we stayed in. The bathrooms have been recently refurbished by the looks, beds are reasonably comfortable, rooms spacious and the units are clean, so great for a family stay. We felt it was pretty good value for money and if staying in Murchison again would return.

We booked the family unit, which was very clean, tidy, spacious and suitable for a family. Upon arrival the proprietor was welcoming and removed the pool cover for the teens to have a swim. Motel is convenient to amenities, value for money and we would definitely return. Thank you

My husband and i got a family unit as we were travelling with my parents. Some of the unit has been refurbished like the bathroom and bedrooms, but the kitchen was a little outdated. However is was very clean and for what we paid for it, it was excellent value for money.

We stay there for one night from Nelson to Greymouth. For the standard studio, it is very small. It may be the smallest room I have been stayed in NZ. The pillow and the bed has a smell, which took me 2 days to wash out. No shampoo... There are not a lot choices in that little town. So if you can make a good plan, try to stay in nelson or Westport. There are so many choices.

We stayed here one night while travelling from Christchurch to Nelson.

Murchison was a fine little town, in a beautiful valley setting, and the motel is located in a quiet back street near to a lovely riverside walk.

We spent the evening in the local pub/hotel watching a Rugby World Cup match with the locals.

Our main problem with the motel was the lack of wardrobe or any hanging space at all - there was not even a hook to hang a coat. This was inconvenient for one night, and would have been impossible for more than one night.

The other problem was the advertised free WiFi - this worked, albeit slowly, for a short time in the late afternoon, but did not work in the evening or the next morning - very inconvenient when this was one of the reasons we chose this motel.

I mentioned both problems to the owner (or manager, I am not sure who he was) as we left the next day. He said that the lack of hanging space was deliberate, as sometimes people hung towels on hooks and wore holes in the towels!!

He said there was no problem with WiFi access at any time - when I said that there certainly was, and I had worked in computer software for more than 30 years and knew what I was talking about he merely said that maybe I would look at their system for him. I declined!
